Breaking out of a dressing rut
by Cheng Jee Yan

Singaporeans value their comfort, but always dressing down can get a tad bit tedious too.

So cue Diva, which recently held a makeover contest for three of our readers to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime-makeover opportunity with a fashion styling workshop organised as part of Fashion Season @ Orchard 2010.

Cheryl Chung 27, Carol Lim, 30 and Felicia Ng turning 40, were sent to learn all they can about their body types and how they can update their looks with the season's latest trends.

They won their spots after taking part in a simple online contest in Divaasia.com which asked them for reasons on why they should be sent for the styling workshop.

Carol and Cheryl, whose usual fashion get-up included a pair of jeans and a comfortable top, wanted to dress more stylishly.

Both ladies felt they had been sticking to the same jeans-and-tee combination for too long and wanted a hand in breaking out of their predictable fashion routine.

Cheryl, who works in a school as an admin executive, said: “I have been dressing in the same style for quite awhile, so I want to find a fresher and a more updated look for myself."

Felicia, on the other hand, was glad she won because her goal was to learn makeup tips and tricks as well as the formula to dressing appropriately for her body type.

The workshop began with stylist R S Danny offering a detailed look at various body shapes, and gave pointers on the do's and don'ts when dressing for different body types.

He also revealed the hottest colours and current fashion trends while illustrating with real-life examples.

After the workshop, the ladies concluded that the presentation by R S Danny was very detailed and informative.

Cheryl commented: “I have a better idea of the category of body shape that I belong to. The presentation touched on eight different types of body shapes which is double the amount I usually read online.”

Felicia felt that Danny articulated all the points well and liked that he substantiated his points with physical examples.

Carol, self-employed, was glad she tried on a dress after the makeover and managed to break out of her dressing rut even though she had initially thought that dresses are very inconvenient.

However she also wished for a more personalised consultation with Danny.

She said: “He mentioned that there were overlapping body types and I believe I am one of them. So I was hoping that he would come up to us individually and specify our body type.”

But she found herself enjoying the makeup segment of the makeover.

She added: "I am very happy I found something different to wear and I really like it. I am going to make an effort to dress a bit more differently now."

Cheryl also took a leap of faith at the makeover and attempted the “biker chic” look that she has always wanted to try out but never found the courage to.
She felt good about it and she believes she will be altering her fashion style after the workshop.

She said: “The good thing about a third party dressing you up is that they are more objective.

"The whole experience was really fun because you have people to fuss around you."

While Carol and Cheryl liked their new looks, Felicia wasn't about to change her style so soon.

She was still more comfortable with the kinds of looks that she had already experimented with in the past. Despite that, she was very satisfied with the makeover.

Felicia, who is currently unemployed, also liked that the stylist provided a list of the different kinds of makeup that was used in their makeovers.

The last segment of the makeover had an element of fun too, which included having everybody's pictures professionally taken by Canon. The workshop attendees got a chance to pose like a professional model on a mini stage, complete with professional lighting.

Felicia quipped: "The photographer actually bothered to give us suggestions and tell us how to pose. I felt like a star up there!"
