How does a mother decide to abandon her baby? The case of the 34-year-old woman who left her four-month-old baby son at an Ang Mo Kio bus stop on a cold and wet, rainy day must have surely raised a few heckles among some parents.
I know I felt that way. But when I realised that the woman was later arrested on suspicion of taking drugs, I felt even more indignant for the little one.
Further reports that she had given birth to the baby despite knowing it had kidney problems while still in the womb made me wonder if it was because her maternal feelings made her disregard what odds her young baby would have to face when he came into this world with a physical defect, or if she was acting out of folly.
It is clear enough to anyone reading this story that the woman could not hold onto a job to support herself, much less a young infant with physiological problems.
While I'm at least relieved to hear that the baby's grandmothers are keen to care for the boy, I do think that all this tussling cannot make for a good environment for such an impressionable young life to grow up in. Ultimately, it is a stable family environment that will give a child the chance at a good life.
My hope is that the baby's parents and family will realise this.
