Hot Tata
by Lisnaree Vichitsorasatra

With her new CD raising temperatures, the sultry singer joins a campaign for global cooling

When Amita "Tata" Young dances to the steamy "El Nin-yo!" from her "Temperature Rising" album, the last thing on our minds is global warming. But think again: Tata is also lending her voice to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for Thailand.

Swapping the sex-bomb outfits for something more suitable, she dropped into the Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCCT) on Wednesday as a guest speaker for UNEP.

Laughter and awareness

"Calling the album 'Temperature Rising' is actually not a contradiction, because it nudges you to think about global warming," says Birathon Kasemsri Na Ayudhaya, managing director of Sony Music Thailand.

The audience of curious Thais and expats at the FCCT weren't really convinced, though they did laugh at Tata's jokes. Was there anything else the hot singer was doing to lower the temperature?

She wasn't here to demand that people throw out their old fridges, she said, instead holding up a UNEP "Ozone Action Programme" full of cartoons showing how CFCs are eating away the ozone layer. Her aim was to spread awareness of climate change to as many people as possible, she added.

Tata's straightforward, honest-talking style makes her perfect for the campaign, says Birathon, adding that the subtle messages in Tata's "Temperature Rising" are more digestible than songs with obvious "green" themes.
