Tanya Chua bags Best Mandarin Female Singer award for third time

Singaporean singer Tanya Chua won Best Mandarin Female Singer at the 23rd Annual Golden Melody Awards last Saturday. This makes her the first female singer to win the accolade three times in the awards' history. She first won the award in 2006, and again in 2008.

She told the media that she was "so touched that she was speechless" and that winning was a "miracle", reported Chinese media Dong Bei Wang.

Judges said that most of the votes were unanimous with a wide winning margin for both male and female best singer awards, reported China Post. The Best Mandarin Male Singer went to Ascent Chan.

Chua won for her album Sing It Out Of Love which she recorded live with a band in the studio. She received the award in tears and thanked her late father who inspired the album, reported The Straits Times.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the stage reunion of girl group S.H.E after Selina Jen was injured in an explosion during a TV shoot in 2010. Fellow group members Hebe Tien and Ella Chen each sang a song, before Jen, while still wearing pressure gloves, appeared last on stage singing Everyone Who Loves Me. Together, they performed their 2010 hit Shero.

Late singer Fong Fei-fei also made an "appearance" in 3D form, performing her hit song Cloud Of Romance in a white suit and hat. The "Queen of Hats", who died of lung cancer in January, was remembered by Ricky Hsiao and Sandy Lam who sang her famous hits, said China Post.

Best Male Singer nominee Jay Chou showed up on the red carpet with his new sculpted body as he had earlier promised. Chou had been working out for his new movie Rooftop, which he'll also direct.

Showing off his toned biceps in a sleeveless rocker vest, he flexed his muscles for the cameras and joked that he wasn't there for the music, but "to tell everyone that it's important to keep fit and work out, no matter how busy you are," reported The New Paper.

Taiwan rock band Mayday swept the music awards in Taipei winning six awards. They bagged best album, best band, best song of the year, best producer, best composer and best arrangement for their latest hit album Second Round.

Other winners include Best Lyricist Wu Hsiung and Best New Artist Llid Kaolo. Singapore-based composer Ricky Ho won Best Instrumental Album Producer for the soundtrack of Warriors Of The Rainbow: Seediq Bale.
