Local actresses reveal their new year resolutions
by Charlene Chua

Zoe Tay wants to gain more muscle and look more toned

Bak kwa, abalone and honey-flavoured sunflower seeds.

These are Chinese New Year goodies that MediaCorp ah jie (big sister in Mandarin) Zoe Tay can't do without.

In the past, she could eat anything she wanted and still maintain a svelte figure.

Now, the mother of three is worried that she has piled on the pounds.

This Chinese New Year, the only thing that she has bought for herself is a pair of jogging shoes. And she plans to start exercising for the first time since giving birth to her first son in 2005.

Tay, 46, told The New Paper: "You can't see (the extra fat) because nowadays I choose to wear bigger dress sizes. I want to exercise so I can gain muscle and look more toned.

"I eat everything I want, but once I feel bloated from a few days of continuous feasting, I will try to cut back on my food."

Kym Ng plans to make better use of her brains

Chinese New Year will be a quiet one for Kym Ng this year because her mother-in-law died recently.

In Chinese tradition, one isn't supposed to celebrate the festive season for the following year or more after the loss of a close family member.

So the actress-host is going to occupy herself by staying at home and reading books or catching up on beauty sleep.

Ng, who is in her 40s and has been married since 2009 to a Chinese Singaporean identified only as Mr Yang, said: "Every year, because I don't have children, I only give out hongbao but I don't receive any.

"This year, I don't have to give any hongbao, so more money for me to buy new clothes and makan!"

Ever the candid and bubbly comedienne, Ng has also made what she thinks is a fun new year's resolution - to make more use of her brain juice.

Lin Meijiao hopes to visit M’sia or Taiwan to study

This Chinese New Year, she will miss one of her best friends who used to bring lots of joy and laughter to those around him.

In the past, when they would often be working together during the festive period, she would open up to him about her desire to retire.

His reply to her, which she did not want to disclose, would always motivate her to carry on doing the job she loves.

But Lin Meijiao is sure of one thing - that the late veteran actor Huang Wenyong, who died of cancer last April, would want his friends and family to carry on enjoying life.

Lin, 50, said: "We will miss Wenyong. Sometimes, when I see his photograph I feel that he's still here.

"But life has to go on. So there's no need to be sad as everyone has to leave this place sooner or later."

Like Huang, who was famed for dressing up as the cai shen ye (God of Wealth) during Chinese New Year, Lin is a Buddhist who believes in being at peace with whatever life throws her way.

She hopes to embrace her faith further this year by embarking on a religious trip to Malaysia or Taiwan for a few months to immerse herself in Buddhist studies.
