Wonders of an age-old therapy

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - It's no secret that the occasional massage works wonders when life gets too hectic and stressful. Unfortunately, for most of us, our busy schedules don't allow it.

However, relatives, friends and colleagues of the 20 participants in "The Art of Rejuvenation" workshop at Balai Berita yesterday might benefit from their newfound knowledge.

The workshop at the New Straits Times Newspaper-In-Education training centre was divided into three parts -- reflexology techniques, healthy diet tips and fitness advice.

ZenSoul manager Rozana Abd Rahim and her therapists demonstrated neck and shoulder massage techniques.

"Massage in its most basic form has been around as long as mankind and today, there are many highly specialised forms and techniques of massage from various cultures," said Rozana.

The head of Pantai Medical Centre's Dietetic Unit, Kanimolli Arasu, gave some tips on healthy eating and macro-nutrients and how to modify recipes as well as determine body mass index.

The final part featured fitness and exercise tips from Synar Gym trainers, who believe in the benefits of exercise in reducing the risks of irreversible diseases.

A demonstration of various stretching and exercise techniques got all the participants on their feet.

Umar Avuni, a freelance yoga instructor and massage therapist for the past five years, said he attended the workshop to learn more about nutrition and fitness and to refine his massage techniques to better serve his clientele.

Umar, who specialises in Indian oil massage and traditional Malay massage, said: "Not everyone is cut out to be a masseur. It takes someone who is passionate and has an understanding of the human body."
