Upgrade your jeans in the name of charity
by Yeoh Wee Teck

THE event is about renewed resources but it also provided a platform for a renewal of friendship.

It’s all about recycling at the Levi’s Get What You Love, Give What You Don’t event, to be held at Takashimaya Square until10pmtoday.

You bring in your old jeans, and you get $50 off a new pair of Levi’s.

The old jeans will be sold at $5. Those not sold will be donated to the Salvation Army.

But for some finalists of The New Paper New Face 2009, it was a happy reunion. Nur Farhanah, Avena Seow, Sherena Ng and Amelia Bones turned up.

They were at the exact location three weeks ago, walking on the runway.

This time round, there was no competition. Just an invitation to support The New Paper New Face 2009 winner Victoria Bradbury.

Victoria, 19, who was also named Miss Levi’s Lady at the contest, had the golden catwalk spot: She opened and closed the fashion show.

She was excited about seeing the others again. Victoria, a law student with Stansfield College, said: “I haven’t been in touch because I’ve been really busy in school, so we’ve only been communicating through Facebook. I miss them so much.”

Singapore Polytechnic student Nur Farhanah, 16, added: “Our school schedules are so scattered, that even meeting them for a few hours was satisfying.”

And the result of the meeting?

“We’re planning for a lunch date with everyone soon,” revealed MDIS student Amelia Bones, 18.

The girls were also excited about the Levi’s recycling project.

Sherena, a 17-year-old Republic Polytechnic student, was impressed.

“Levi’s is very creative and considerate by recycling old jeans and making them into such beautiful decorations.”

Recycling

All around Takashimaya Square were creations made out of old Levi’s jeans.

There was an owl, spider and butterfly, alongside a denim Christmas tree.

For those in the mood for shopping, here’s what to expect from Levi’s in the coming months: Purple is big with them, as are black and blue.

Jeans are tapered and close to the skin, great for giving the illusion of long limbs.

When you’re done reading the papers, edit your wardrobe immediately.

Try on every pair of jeans you have, and the ones that don’t fit anymore, trade them in for new ones that do.

Think of it as an upgrade in the name of charity.
