Colour away yesterday's look
by MaryAnn Soh

Feeling washed out and tired of your discoloured or sombre black hair? Then it's time for some - radical - change.

This season you can look forward to a wide range colour styles which come straight out of the look books of Asia's leading fashion capital, Tokyo!

Seven hair colorists representing salons islandwide have graduated from Hoyu's Professional Hair Colouring Course 2009. The year-long programme gave the aspiring colorists the opportunity to visit Japan at different phases of their training. They bring us 21 creative ColorStyles inspired by glamour of Ginza and edginess of Harajuku.

But just when you are worried the looks might be too outlandish, thankfully, our local colorists have toned down the colour works to suit the Singaporean palette.

ColorStyles were created with Hoyu's Promaster EX series, which boasts a range of 150 colours of different hues and tones.

While most of us are concerned about colour fading, the Promaster EX range slows discolouration as it is made up of hair protection ingredients like teanin and taurine. The hair colourant also contains high colour concentration and low peroxide levels. With only 2% to 6% of peroxide, the highlighter does not pry open your hair follicles, yet the desired hair colour can still be attained as the high colour concentration compensates for it. This way, your hair colour is more lasting and worth every buck.

There's more to rejoice about as the other ingredients like lanolin and bee's wax also softens and smooths hair out, making those problematic fizzy ends more manageable.

Enough said, check out the four ravishing styles we picked for you!

The swankiest of them all is Winter Aurora by hair colorist Serene. The look is feminine, stylish and classy as it infuses Violet and Monotone to achieve an orchid-purple hair colour. With the winter greys of Fall fashion, wear this jewel-toned look on your head and you will sparkle among the crowd.
Autumn Warmth is for the modern romantic woman, created by Kenny. Using brown, copper, gold and ruby, the burgundy-wine result is professional-looking and charming. The highlights work best when accentuated with the cascading curls of long tresses.
Opt for Frosty Winter if you have a short spunky hair style. The base colour of this look is blue black - always a refreshing alternative for black. The edgy look will be even cooler if you are game enough to go for electric blue sharpen the layers of your hair. Otherwise, stick to navies, but either way the look is more frosty than trampy - you will not look like a London Underground clubber.
Move away from the conventional brown look and be creative. Bohemian Reverie, most suitable for shoulder-length hairdos, infuses olive and lime for a whole new look. Hair colorist El May also recommends ash purple highlights on the fringes and sides to spice things up. This look is definitely for the trendsetting and forward-looking female.
