Mr Vasavan said there are four main reasons couples remain together after infidelity:

1. They do not want to cause trauma to their loved ones, especially their children.

2. To "save face" in the Asian culture.

3. Support from family, religious leaders and close friends can help them iron things out.

4. They believe in giving each other a chance and agree to start life afresh.

How normal is it for couples to overcome infidelity and reconcile?

Mr Vasavan said that when it's a one-off and happens for the first time, the spouse is usually forgiving.

But recurrences could make the spouse consider a divorce.

He noted that "there is a limit to the number of times a person is given a chance to repent".
