Helen Su: From hottie model to fitness trainer
by Cheong Poh Kwan

CHINESE-AMERICAN model Helen Su once made a living posing provocatively in lingerie, go-go dancing at motorshows, and test-driving fancy new cars in nothing but a tiny bikini.

But the 29-year-old is now saying no to all that, and the former Hot Import Nights model is doing it for love.

She relocated to Singapore from Los Angeles in 2010 to join her boyfriend Dave Wang, also a Chinese-American who now works in the Singapore office of social media giant Facebook. The couple got engaged last December after dating for three and a half years.

"When they (the guys) first meet you, they think your modeling stuff is so awesome. But once they say 'I love you' and it's real, it'll become the exact opposite.

They will say: Put on more clothes, take down those bikini pictures, this is not ok anymore," said Su. But of course, she is happy to oblige.

The voluptuous Su still misses her modeling days, but she is putting the glamour behind to focus on her entrepreneurial venture.

The certified fitness coach recently founded Bodybarre, and is now running classes on Barre, a ballet-inspired fitness routine.

"It is a little bit of Yoga, Pilates and ballet. But the best way to explain Barre: it's a high-intensity, low-impact class about exhausting each muscle category to its shaky point, and in that way we create a lean dancer's body."

Besides flexing her entrepreneurial skills, Su said by teaching Barre, she hopes to show women the right way to lose weight.

She admitted to struggling with her weight during her teenage years, dropping from 63.5kg to 36kg during an anorexic period that lasted up to a year-and-a-half.

"I know it sounds cheesy, but that's the reason why I love what I do."
