Rockstars - Nichloas Kirkwood
by Karen Tee

This young shoe maestro is best known for his geometric and sculptural stilettos. The 29-year-old graduated from London's prestigious Central St Martins in 2005 and launched his eponymous brand the same year.

Since then, his designs have been spotted on the heels of famous shoe lovers including Sarah Jessica Parker and Diane Kruger.

What is the inspiration behind your designs?

I wanted to take the language of my shoes and elements of their designs and translate it into different fabrications and forms and create something feminine but modern.

How is designing jewellery different from designing shoes?

Designing is about shape, form and functionality. Designing a piece of jewellery is very different from designing a shoe.

I was really inspired by the concept of 'costume' and the ways jewellery can be worn around the body and what they represent.

I've never created a jewellery collection but I love working with different materials so creating jewellery was a really interesting challenge.

What aspect of your aesthetic has been conveyed through the jewellery?

I like to create graphic-looking pieces, a juxtaposition of sharp edges, smooth curved lines and a combination of textures.
