History teacher makes history
by Elaine Cheong

Dressed in a striking hot pink tube dress with lace overlay, Annabel Tan stood out when she strutted out to meet the crowd at Zouk last Thursday.

Later, she was crowned Miss Female Gorgeous 2009 and was the biggest winner of the night.

The petite 25-year-old history teacher swept four of the six subsidiary awards, Ms Dynamic Female, Ms Bebe-licious, Risis Most Radiant Female and Ms StudioLine Style Siren, on top of her main win. In all, Annabel walked away with approximately $4,000 worth of prizes.

Among the 1,000-strong crowd that turned up for the Female event, her "army" of supporters were her biggest fans with the loudest cheers. The chants of her name, "Annabel, Annabel, Annabel!" filled the club whenever she came on stage. If there was a Miss Popularity title, she would have snagged it along her other titles.

The Most Gorgeous Male award went to another crowd favourite Mr Adrian Jalaludin, 24, TV host and actor, who also won Most Dynamic Male.

We managed to catch up with the wide-grinned Annabel after the event to find out how she was feeling. She told us that she was overwhelmed and perhaps the euphoria will settle in at home. She also repeatedly thanked her supporters and to everybody who came down gratefully, adding that she owes them a lot of favours.

Apart from hoping to squeeze into the top 10, she told us that she was not eyeing for a single title, but only for a chance to speak. She definitely had a chance to leave an impression when the hosts asked her the question: "If you held a top spot in the Ministry of Education, what would you do?"

Her response was: "I would implement an inspirational break, a paid break for the teachers in Singapore so that they'll feel rejuvenated and be all ready to input to their young students again."

Annabel also told us that this is one of her biggest achievements because she has never really been the type to take part in contests.

She said: "The sense of winning is good, considering I never really took part in any competitions (making reference to her schooldays)."

You might wonder what will she do with all the prizes she's won? Without second thought, she said cheerfully: "Give it away! I have a plan for most of them.

"Like I plan to give away the camera, and I think I will have quite a lot in stock for Chirstmas this year. I was worried about gifts as Christmas is nearing, but now I'm glad I would have something to give."

Given another opportunity, she was unsure if she would consider joining again as this year's competition was a timely event. The year-end period marked the end of the school examinations and school holidays so she was able to concentrate on this.

What was the experience like? Annabel told us that the competition was what each individual made of it.

"Though there were ups and downs whereby some days you just don't feel gorgeous, you just have to take it as you go in and do it for the fun, make friends and challenge yourself," said Annabel.

Well, life resumes for the happy winner who is considering resuming relief teaching next year.

No after-parties for her, she explains. "Sorry, I am very boring. I think I'm going for Roti Prata because I've been trying to eat healthy to prepare for this or at least feel the best, so now I'm going to binge!"

A well-deserved meal indeed.

OTHER SUBSIDIARY AWARD WINNERS

Mr StudioLine Style Stud: Mr Edwin Tan

Ms Photogenic: Ms Agnes Teo

Ms Anna-igmatic: Ms Taryn Swyny Fonseca

readers' comments
She is only doing relief teaching. Trained permanent teachers as civil servants would not have been allowed to participate in such a contest without the approval of MOE. And MOE's approval is unlikely to be forthcoming.
