Put sex myths to bed (part 1)

Fact or fiction? We yank the covers off bedroom falsehoods so that you can have smarter, more liberated sex! Here are 12 sex myths debunked.

1. You can't get pregnant during your period - FALSE!

There is a chance that you can get pregnant during a period, especially towards the tail-end of your menstrual cycle. There are a couple of reasons for this. While having a period means breaking down of the lining and "washing away", it is possible that the unfertilised egg is still in the uterus and conception can occur if you have sex when you think you are finishing your period.

Ovulation, the process in which a woman's ovaries release an egg, takes place 14 days before the end of your cycle. But when you experience a very short cycle, it is possible that you will ovulate while you are still menstruating. If you have sex before, or during your period, then there can be a chance of pregnancy.

Sometimes women who are ovulating can experience vaginal spotting due to stress or hormonal changes, and that can be mistaken for a period. As you are most fertile just after ovulation, you are more likely to get pregnant at this time than any other in your cycle.

Typically, sperm survives for two to three days in a woman's body. But under "optimum" conditions, sperm can stay "active" for up to five days and still be able to fertilise an egg during this time. So if you've had unprotected sex before or after ovulation, it's best you run a pregnancy test.

2.You can't get pregnant if the man pulls out before he ejaculates - FALSE!

It is possible for sperm to come out at anytime during sex. Men release small amount of fluid before ejaculation, commonly known as the "pre-cum", which can contain sperm. Men also cannot exactly tell when the pre-ejaculate is released. Besides, it is easy for your partner to get carried away in the heat of the moment.

3. You can't get pregnant if you shower or douche right after sex - FALSE!

It only takes a second for the sperm to travel to the cervix, The Times of India reported. By the time you hit the shower, the sperm would have had all time to fertilise the egg.

4. You can't get pregnant while having sex standing up, or in the shower - FALSE!

If you have unprotected sex you can get pregnant, no matter how or where you do it.
