Ris Low gives up her crown

THE beauty queen who had fallen from grace has quit.

Organisers of the local beauty pageant, ERM World, released an official statement saying that Miss Ris Low has resigned from her crown as Miss Singapore World 2009. This comes less than a week after her past conviction for credit card fraud was exposed.

The 19-year-old student will not represent Singapore at the international pageant in South Africa and the organisers will be interviewing a new representative to represent Singapore in the coming days.

Ms Low's resignation was an unanimous decision between the organiser and Ms Low's parents. ERM said: "[Her parents] have agreed to allow their daughter to resign from the crown as we feel is in the best interest for the Miss Singapore World Pageant and Singapore at large."

"We are accepting her resignation," said ERM.

The local beauty pageant organiser said that it did not comment earlier because they were taken aback by this incident.

"This is the first time in Singapore beauty pageant history that such an incident has occurred. We had to be careful with the approach."

With regards to Low's fraudulent past, ERM had this to say: "We feel sorry for her circumstances but we cannot compromise on our contest rules, regulations and the image of the Miss Singapore World Pageant."

ERM further explained that "there was no way of checking if a contestant has a criminal record or suffering from depression."

"We did not have any documentary evidence to justify the allegations and could be faced with legal implications later."

But the organisers praised Ms Low for her good performance and beauty, saying she was "determined, well-behaved and performed well" throughout the competition and had "excelled" in the competition. Low took home eight special awards other than the Miss Singapore World title.

Its good that she finally resign.
But i dont even think she is remorseful. She gave remarks thats the probation case is not that serious and she was given a second chance. It seems she treats the second chance as a given and is not really thankful that she is not in jail now. Others are now in jail for the same kind of offence she did. Even lawyers have said that she was very lucky.

Now she better hope that the prosecuition does not reopen the case to ask for resentencing due to her lack of remorse. We have seen it happen to the condo manager who glued his neighbours doors and mail boxes.

Ris Low is a disgrace to Singapore. Poor grasp of English can be forgiven, forgotten and polish up. However, rotten core is beyond help. What make her a disgrace is she does not have a sense of guilty about her conviction in not 1 but 7 credit card fraud. Her skin is so thick that she told the press that she would made a come back after her 2 years of supervised probation has ended. There are a handful of examples of people (e.g. Christopher Lee) who had done something wrong but change over a new leave by recognizing their guilt. The society will re-accept them and forget about their past. I really will hope that the organizer for such event will do a thorough screening on the background of the finalists to prevent similar scam from happening again.

Ris Low can't even resign with class. To save face, Ris Low had ERM say in an official statement that her parents allowed her to resign.

Ris Low isn't mature enough to make her own decisions? Just how incompetent is Ris Low?

This person was going to represent Singapore?

Ris Low needs to grow up. Be a responsible adult, take full responsibility and stop hiding behind her parents. How hard is it to say that it is your decision to resign?

Just imagine if you are a pretty and well articulated woman in the same contest as her. And the winner is her, Ris Low! :D

Ms Low did the right thing to give up her crown. You have done an honourable thing by doing so, miss. Please use this as a lesson and move on. You have a long way to go.

Ris is a big winner in this whole saga. She milked enough publicity and then when she see that there is nothing much to gain, she decided to give up herself instead of being forced to do so.

Don't look down on her poor english. She is quite skillful on managing the PR side. Now the attention is turn to the organiser. Nobody will mention her name now.

Ms Low had won so many awards, as you know, because the judges are blind. She has no choice but to give up. If I am her mum, I would even ask her not to participate. Not sure the judges have heard of "Reference Check" in application form?

This comment is for the judges:"WELCOME TO THE CLUB OF BLIND,YOU CAN JOIN THE SINGAPORE IDOL JUDGE!" Question to ask is RIS Low, she related to ERM or did she sleep with the judges? This is the organizers and the judges problem not the contestant! To participate in Singapore pageant, you mean the organizers do not indicate they need any qualification and academic, even SIA's least requirement for education is diploma! You're eating your own poison... Judges know her English is so poor yet still can put the crown on her, is somewhere goes wrong over their eyes? Finally, I understand why everytime in Miss Singapore I can never see pretty girl taking part, it is because all Singapore's pretty and high education lady think it is not worth to take part in such a contest.
