A parachute dress?
by Karen Lim

MINIMALISTIC, simple and non-fussy. This is the style of nicholas, the brainchild of Nic Wong, 36, a Singapore fashion designer who is currently involved in the Go Red For Women campaign, a charity drive to raise awareness of heart disease among women.

Nic first emerged as a winner of the Mercedes Benz Asia Fashion Award in Singapore in 2004 and has since been a familiar face at the annual Singapore Fashion Festival and Fashion Week.

Nic's signature style is a juxtaposition of contrasting elements: modern and classic, asymmetry and order. The red dress which he designed and created for the Go Red For Women campaign, is also a showcase of his subtle structural form.

Inspired by the shape and form of a parachute, Nic's little red dress, which will be on display at Istean Scotts from May 18 onwards, demonstrates puffs and folds of huge parachutes.

"To me, the parachute means you're in the sky - it also means to take things easy, your heart is lighter too.

"When you're up there, you can see everything and it lightens your spirit. I just feel that we should learn to be positive in life, so this ties in with the charity drive," explained Nic.

The red parachute dress is an extension of his "My Favourite Shirt" collection for this season.

Nic will also be involved in this year's Audi Fashion Festival which is held in conjunction with the Go Red For Women campaign. He will also be heading to Tokyo in October for the Japan Fashion Week, where he will showcase his Spring/Summer collection.
