80 manicurists attempt to break record at charity event
by Diva

SINGAPORE - Dressed in pink tees and all in the name of charity, 80 manicurists came together to polish the fingernails of 380 shoppers during a three-hour long charity drive organised by Parkway Parade on March 8.

Held in conjunction with International Women's Day, the 'Nails for a Cause' event raised over $4,000 for the Cervical Cancer Preventive Fund, which was set up by the Singapore Cancer Society in 2007.

The funds seeks to educate women on preventing cervical cancer, and providing needy patients with treatment subsidies and welfare assistance.

The donations were collected from participants who had purchased a $10 coupon earlier from The Straits Times' Urban and from shoppers who wished to join in on the record-breaking attempt. Additional donations were also given by members of the public on the event day.

According to the organisers, they are still waiting for confirmation from The Guinness Book of Records to see if they have made it into the books.

To kick start the event, Ms Shirley Tan and Ms Bernice Cheak, were presented with jewellery from Lee Hwa Jewellery worth more than $3,000 for their inspirational stories.

The two women were nominated by their daughters on Parkway Parade's "Celebrating Women App" and chosen as winners by a panel of judges from Parkway Parade.

One of the winners, Ms Cheak, never complained when she went through a divorce and two bouts of cancer, said her daughter in her nomination entry. She also described her mother as a wonderful lady who "smiles through her pain".

Hosted by Eileen Wee, shoppers were serenaded by local duo, Jack and Rai, as they did the manicures.

Commenting on behalf of Parkway Parade, General Manager, Stephanie Poh said: "We at Parkway Parade are proud to be part of this celebration, being able to support a good cause and empowering women at the same time."
