It is the most wonderful time of the year... when we dish out trophies to the cool kids, the crazies and the curious in the world of local entertainment. The New Paper's annual Flame Awards are back again.

This year, again, we had non-celebrities stealing the headlines.

So what did our celebs do? They sought comfort in social media, posting so many selfies on Instagram we decided we had to crown a Selfie King or Queen this year. But that is not the only new category we have.

Usually, the losers of local entertainment are nominated for our Si Beh Suay (Hokkien for damn unlucky) award. This year, we decided to get with the times and just call them out for what they really are - #fails.

Concert organisers who failed to produce the acts they advertised would top any music fan's #fail list this year.

But they will face stiff competition from one young lad who tarnished the squeaky clean image of the Ah Boys by admitting to hitting his girlfriend and then botching the standard woe-is-me, excuse-my-behaviour post-incident PR.

But our local celebrities are not all rotten - hey, one even became a monk.

NEW CATEGORY

He and others who threw lovely instead of icky curveballs at us this year will be honoured in our new Surprise! of the Year category. Look out for our Flame categories every day until next Tuesday, where you will find out what our nominees had to say for themselves. Then, help us decide who deserves to take home these titles.

Our celebrity winners will be unveiled in our special Boxing Day issue on Dec 26.

For the first time, we'll be letting you vote online on our Facebook page (facebook.com/thenewpaper), and those clicks could win you some fabulous hotel stays and dining vouchers. (See report at top of facing page.)

We begin, of course, with our favourite Babe of the Year category, where we offer you the good, the bad and the downright bodacious. You figure out who is what.
