Bugis Junction's new look
by Soon Wei Sze

Bugis Junction is the latest mall to join the mass of revamped shopping spaces here.

The five-storey mall - which was built in 1995 - has undergone a four-month makeover of levels two and three of its BHG department store.

Close to 70,000 sq ft of the department store has been converted into retail shops to house labels such as Bratpack, Kappa, New Balance and adidas, which were previously unavailable at Bugis Junction.

These are among 20 new brands at the mall. Meanwhile, nine shops - such as Billabong, Topshop and Topman and Nike - have also been given a facelift.

Muji returns as a stand-alone store, having previously been housed within BHG.

New-to-market brands Iron Fist - a streetwear label from the United States - and Hong Kong fashion brand Chocoolate by i.t have also made their Singapore debuts in Bugis Junction.

Headlining Bugis Junction's $35-million revamp is the aLT concept store by BHG, which houses fashion accessories, lifestyle and beauty-product offerings.

To improve traffic flow, the mall has built a new main entrance on the ground level outside BHG department store for commuters exiting the underground MRT station.

Besides fashion labels, the shopping centre - which is owned by CapitaMall Trust - has brought in new lifestyle tenants.

These include Challenger, Digital Style, My Little Brick Shop, Play Imaginative, Simply Toys and Toys Outpost.

Adding to the food-and-beverage scene there is Miam Miam Cafe on level two. This cafe-restaurant offers French artisanal cuisine with techniques derived from traditional Japanese culinary skills.

While works on levels two and three have been completed, work on level one will be completed only in phase two of the revamp, which will commence after Chinese New Year in February.

This will include works on basement one and the mall's central retail block.

The centre manager of Bugis Junction, Ms Eugenie Yap, said: "We will continue to introduce new brands and reinvigorate existing concepts at Bugis Junction to enhance the shopping experience for everyone."
