1 couple 126 bridesmaids

Sri Lanka - It was the best day of their lives for Sri Lankan couple Nisansala and Nalin.

Not only did they celebrate the wedding with pomp and grandeur, they also broke a world record in the process.

The wedding yesterday in the Sri Lankan city of Negombo, about 30km north of capital Colombo, broke the Guinness World Record for a wedding with the most bridesmaids for a bride, Sri Lankan newspaper Daily News reported.

With 126 bridesmaids, 25 best men accompanied by 20 page boys and 23 flower girls, the ceremony broke a previous record of having 96 bridesmaids at a wedding in Thailand.

The wedding was the brainchild of Ms Champi Siriwardana, one of Sri Lanka's leading bridal wear designers. Incidentally, the bride is Ms Siriwardana's sister-in-law.

The wedding was held under the patronage of Sri Lanka's First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

While the designer was in charge of the dresses, The Wedding Designer, a wedding and event planner, designed the entire ceremonial session, the report said. The designer received her award from Guinness World Record official Seyda Subasi Gemici during the wedding ceremony.

Forte

Ms Siriwardana told Daily News: "Weddings are my forte and I have excelled in that specific field."

She said her dream is to create an impact not only in Sri Lanka but internationally as well.

She said: "I feel I have accomplished this. Breaking the Guinness World Record is no mean feat."
