Instant face-brighteners
by Gladys Chung

These skincare lotions and potions promise to perk up your skin immediately so you look fresher and rejuvenated.

Use these in the morning or before an important meeting to make the most of the effects.

Ole Henriksen Lemon Strip Flash Peel $72, from Sephora stores, such as 01-05 Ion Orchard

This gel promises the benefits of acid peels available at spas.

It contains lactic, glycolic and fruit acids, as well as orange and lemon extracts to supposedly refine and brighten skin, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Review: After leaving a thin layer of the gel on my face for 10 minutes, my skin felt smoother, brighter and a little more plump.

It can sting broken skin a little, so make sure you do not apply it on any cuts or healing acne bumps.

Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturiser $50, from Origins counters Ginseng and caffeine apparently boost cell energy; olive, wheat and barley replenish moisture; and grapefruit, spearmint and lemon oils lift the spirit.

Review: This moisturiser was just the thing I needed before the start of a hectic Monday morning. I inhaled deeply as I applied the cream on my face and the citrus oils perked me up instantly. My skin also remained matte for the rest of the day - a sign that it is thoroughly hydrated.

Glow by Dr Brandt Ruby Crystal Retinol Hydracreme $95, from Sccube the Apothecary, 05-25 Takashimaya Department Store

This formula promises to enhance the complexion instantly. It contains retinol (a vitamin A derivative) to speed up cell renewal and improve skin tone.

It also minimises the appearance of fine lines with its light-reflecting pigments.

Review: I have skin that is easily irritated and this retinol cream did not cause any reaction.

After I smoothed on this pearlescent cream, my skin instantly looked brighter and more even in tone.
