10 reasons why you shouldn’t hate Gwynnie
by Joanne Soh

One week.

That is how long it took for the most hated celebrity in the world to be crowned the most beautiful.

Hollywood A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow has done the impossible.

The US actress catapulted from the bottom of the heap - thanks to Star magazine readers - to the top of the pedestal as the World's Most Beautiful Woman by the editors of another US rag, People magazine, on Wednesday.

Last week, Star released its annual poll of Hollywood's Most Hated Stars in film, music and television, and Paltrow came up tops, beating Chris Brown and Kristen Stewart.

Currently seen on the big screen as the titular superhero's girlfriend Pepper Potts in Iron Man 3, Paltrow is tall, slim and happily married to a rock star. At 40, her life has never been better.

Yet, she attracts rabid haters, who've accused her of being arrogant, fake and patronising. Why all the ill will towards poor Gwynnie? Here are 10 reasons why you should reign in the nastiness.

1. Don't hate her because she's beautiful

Her perfect blonde hair is her trademark. She also has enviable long legs and an ultra-lean physique.

Combine them with sparkling eyes and a pearly white smile, and Paltrow is a picture of beauty.

That killer bod doesn't come easy though.

If you put in as many intensive hours as the fitness freak, and monitor carefully what you eat, you can have that taut bod too.

2. Don't hate her because she's beautiful inside

Paltrow's beauty is beyond skin deep.

She uses her status to raise funds for charities such as The Edible Schoolyard, which is dedicated to improving the health and values of American children.

She also represents the Bruce Paltrow Oral Cancer Fund - along with actress-mother Blythe Danner and brother Jake - to raise awareness of oral cancer after her late father Bruce succumbed to the disease in 2002.

3. Don't hate her for having the perfect family

Paltrow is married to Chris Martin , the frontman of British rock group Coldplay. This December, the couple will celebrate their 10th anniversary, which is an eternity for celebrities.

The couple have two adorable children, nine-year-old Apple and seven-year-old Moses.

Their union seems solid because family always comes first for them.

4. Don't hate her because she name-drops her famous BFFs all the time

Paltrow has been criticised for bragging about having double-date nights with music couple Beyonce and Jay-Z.

Or that her son wants to be a rapper like Uncle Jay. Or going shopping with Cameron Diaz.

So her friends are famous people. So what? Is that a crime?

5. Don't hate her because she won an Oscar

She became a household name in 1999 when she won the best actress Oscar for Shakespeare In Love.

But instead of praise, Paltrow gained infamy because of her weepy acceptance speech.

Sure, her win was debatable - many placed their bets on Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth - but to just zoom in on her on-stage thank-yous?

Come on, so many other actresses have cried after winning the Oscar - Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Kate Winslet, Julia Roberts... the list goes on.

6. Don't hate her because she's talented

Paltrow decided to show the world she can also sing and dance - and did just that in the TV musical comedy series Glee, where she played hot substitute teacher Holly Holiday. Her cover of Cee Lo Green's song Forget You even became a hit.

But Paltrow can really sing and dance - she has an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series to prove that.

7. Don't hate her because she can wear anything

A darling with designers, Paltrow can pull off all kind of looks, from the strange (Erdem floral pantsuit at the Paris premiere of Iron Man 3) to the glam (Antonio Berardi see-through gown at the Iron Man 3 Los Angeles premiere).

But she said she's just a T-shirt-and-jeans person around the house - just like us normal folks.

8. Don't hate her because she's a lifestyle guru

Paltrow has been dishing out advice - financial, fashion, family and food - through Goop, the info-filled Gwynnie-curated lifestyle blog since 2008.

Her tips can come across as practical or unrealistic, depending on whether you prefer to take them with a pinch of salt or hook, line and sinker.

9. Don't hate her for promoting an elite lifestyle

Paltrow has also been slammed for promoting a lifestyle that's beyond the reach of normal Americans.

A recipe that requires shelling out a few thousand bucks for ingredients? A holiday which costs six figures?

Detractors say this sort of thing is only for the rich and the famous - but she IS rich and famous.

10. Don't hate her because she's an over-achiever

Not content with being a wife and mother by day and Hollywood superstar by night, Paltrow was also hired as a TV host to anchor the cooking series Spain... On The Road Again With Mario Batali.

Add author to that list too.

She has written four cookbooks, with her latest It's All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good And Feel Great making it to the top of the New York Times bestseller list.
