Wendy Cheng was born on April 28, 1984. She studied at River Valley High School, then Singapore Polytechnic, from where she graduated with a diploma in mass media.
According to her profile in Nuffnang, a local blogging agency that manages blogs and creates a platform for bloggers to be exposed to prospective advertisers, Cheng started blogging after a rival in love threw away a diary in which she had recorded her thoughts.
Wanting to air her thoughts in a space that nobody could throw away, she started blogging at
xiaxue.blogspot.com in April 2003.
Her blog was the first from Singapore to enter the Technorati Global Top 100 Blogs List. She has won several awards, including the 2004 and 2005 Wizbang Weblog Awards Best Asian Blog and the 2005 Bloggies Best Asian Weblog.
She married American Mike Sayre in 2010. They had met online after he discovered her blog in 2005. He flew to Singapore in 2006 to meet her.
Cheng has had her share of controversy. In October 2005, she condemned a disabled man, who had scolded someone for using a toilet for the handicapped. This led to an online backlash that prompted two of her then-sponsors to cancel their deals. Two months later, she was accused of being racist after she suggested that foreign workers be banned from Orchard Road, as they were "molesting" Singaporean girls.
She also has a heated rivalry with blogger Dawn Yang, who has threatened to sue her for an allegedly defamatory post in June 2008.
