Don't miss the Gucci Flora Icon exhibition in Singapore
by Niki Bruce

For three days only Singapore will be privy to the stunning Gucci Flora Icon exhibition of archival pieces from Florence's Gucci Museo featuring original Flora scarves and drawings from illustrator Vittorio Accornero dating back to the '60s and '70s.

The Gucci Flora Icon exhibition will be held at the ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands, from March 22-24, 2013, and will also be open to visitors who buy a general entry ticket to the museum on March 23 and 24, 2013.

From its birth in 1966 when Princess Grace visited Gucci's Via Monte Napoleone store with her husband Prince Rainier and had a print commissioned for her by Rodolfo Gucci, the iconic Flora pattern has featured on everything from women's ready-to-wear pieces including mini dresses, blouses, gowns and handbags to unique porcelain items.

Artist Vittorio Accornero was commissioned by Rodolfo Gucci to create a floral pattern for an original silk scarf especially for the Princess; the original illustration featured 43 varieties of flowers, plants and insects that over time has spurred multiple interpretations.

Frida Giannini revived the print on a Gucci accessories collection for summer 2005 and it's been going strong ever since.

When she launched the re-imagined Flora print range of accessories, Giannini said: "The timing is perfect for Flora. It is so colorful and refreshing and that seems right now, I feel privileged to work with this classic. It's instantly recognizable but not too literal. Very modern."

The first collection included a Flora Hobo and a Flora Jackie, as well as the Flora Bamboo, a perfect mix of two classic Gucci icons. There was even a Flora evening clutch - in silk satin with a Swarovski crystal beaded closure - swimsuits, towels and shoes.

Since then the Flora print has been the inspiration for a fragrance - Gucci Flora Eau de Toilette in 2009 - and an amazing collaboration between Giannini and renowned Japanese Manga artist, Hirohiko Araki on a window display that was Inspired by Giannini's 2013 Cruise Collection and featured the famous print.

Don't miss this opportunity to see some original, beautiful pieces of art and fashion history right here in Singapore. Check out the gallery below for a few examples of just some of the Gucci Flora print's incarnations over the years.

The Gucci Flora Icon exhibition in Singapore will be on display for private viewing on March 22, 2013, and open to the public on March 23 and 24, 2013, at the ArtScience Museum in Marina Bay Sands.
