Singapore men's fashion labels to check out
by Imran Jalal

Ready to shop? Here are six Singapore men's fashion labels to check out

1. Menswear Menswear

Who: This Singapore- and London-based outfit is helmed by design director Zin Cattell, 34, and his five-man team. The former fashion consultant launched his menswear line yesterday. He also has a bespoke womenswear range called Womenswear Womenswear.

What: This label gives traditional tailoring a minimalist spin. Jackets, such as this denim double-breasted piece, are unlined and made of lightweight fabrics, making them suitable for the weather here and versatile enough for day or night.

Where: Menswearmenswear.com

How much: All shirts are priced at $160 each, trousers are $180 each and jackets cost $320 each.

2. Dzojchen

Who: This three-year-old label is helmed by Singapore-based, British-Chinese designer Chelsea Scott-Blackhall, 30, who is best known for her jeans designs. The upcoming spring/summer 2013 season will feature her first full-fledged men's collection.

What: Expect a rock 'n' roll edge to traditional menswear tailoring. Slim drop-crotch leather pants - the collection's star item - are paired with a dressy three-piece suit. Shirts with high collars and jackets in brocade fabrics add a touch of drama.

Where: Futurefashionnow.com

How much: From $200 for a pair of jeans to $900 for an Italian cashmere tailored blazer.

3. Evenodd

Who: Self-taught fashion designer Samuel Wong, 24, a fashion communications graduate from Lasalle College of the Arts, launched his first menswear collection in January last year at multi-label boutique Blackmarket No. 2 at Orchard Central. The label is also stocked at Hide & Seek and W Singapore Sentosa Cove hotel.

What: The label, which is known for its dark, edgy designs, strikes an upbeat note with the upcoming spring/summer 2013 collection which features fun digital prints of white rope yarns. Besides appearing on panels of bomber jackets, jumpers and blazers, the print also features on tees and shorts.

Where: Futurefashionnow.com and Blackmarket No. 2, 02-10 Orchard Central

How much: From $89 for a digital printed T-shirt to $289 for a double-breasted jacket.

4. Crawford & Sons

Who: After launching womenswear label Amen in 2010, designer couple Clinton Leicester, 24, and Nicole Wong, 23, have taken the plunge into menswear. The duo, who are engaged, debuted Crawford & Sons earlier this month.

What: Their no-frills collection comprises shirts and pants as well as handmade accessories, such as ties and pocket squares.

The brand aces classic menswear staples with its precise tailoring. Its preppy cotton shirts with small gingham checks or thin horizontal stripes are cut lean.

Details, such as unfused shirt collars, go a long way to keep the clothes in good shape. A fused collar has a lining which gives it a stiff appearance, while an unfused collar does not. A poorly made fused collar might shrink in the wash or become wrinkly.

Where: Crawfordnsons.com

How much: From $29 for a bracelet to $350 for a cardigan.

5. Mils

Who: Since his debut collection for spring/summer 2012, Mr Sunny Lim's reputation as a menswear designer to watch has grown quickly.

The 24-year-old Lasalle College of the Arts graduate was invited to show his spring/summer 2012 designs at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2012 in May.

By March next year, he will be stocked at three stores in Tokyo - Wut Berlin, Destination Tokyo and Gris Garden.

What: Made for the modern man, the clothes bear a stark aesthetic. The futuristic look of the spring/summer 2013 collection is inspired by English author Aldous Huxley's sci-fi classic, Brave New World. The pieces feature sheer panels on lab coats, as well as contrast-panel trousers.

Where: Parco Next Next, Level 2 Parco Marina Bay; Hide & Seek, 71 Bussorah Street; and First Storey, 01-49 Block 78 Guan Chuan Street

How much: From $69 for tees to more than $399 for jackets.

6. Thomas Wee

Who: Fashion doyen Thomas Wee, 63, who celebrates his 42nd year in the business this year, is designing menswear again after more than a decade.

Known as the King of the Jacket for his impeccable tailoring, he started an executive line for men and women called Mixables in 1986, and worked on his last menswear collection for his diffusion line, Sino, in 1999.

He debuted his new eponymous menswear line during Digital Fashion Week Singapore last month.

What: The man is famous for his precision tailoring and cuts, seen in his dresses with a one-seam detail.

His menswear collection plays with volume in the form of cropped wide-legged pants as well as structured but sheer shirts.

Where: Zalora.sg; and Coda Co., 02-03 Scotts Square

How much: From $169 for a long-sleeved tee to $599 for a tailored jacket.
