Parkway bets on fashion and food
by Chan Choong Han

The atmosphere was electric as bright, vibrant party clothes on svelte models were sent down a runway on Sunday.

Here's a surprise: The runway wasn't in a fancy tent along Orchard Road. Instead, the clothes - from labels PurPur, Levi's and Bossini - were shown in Parkway Parade, the Marine Parade mall that has been a staple for fashion finds for Eastsiders for years.

The show caused quite a buzz, with information-technology consultant Caroline Voon saying that she was inspired by the looks that came down the catwalk.

"I can already think of some ideas that I could use," said Ms Voon, 41, adding that she might wear the dresses she saw to garden parties.

The outfits were fun and whimsical, having been styled with accessories that looked like food, such as "doughnuts" perched atop a pair of sunglasses.

Ms Angelyn Woo, 37, a customer service manager, said: "The show was quirky, but stylish."

The event ended with a dessert demonstration by chef Eric Low, chef-owner of Lush Epicurean culinary consultancy, who showed the crowd how to put together osmanthus jellies with wolfberries.

The catwalk show and dessert demo were part of Savoury & Stylish, a promotional event that is on until Aug 12. Tomorrow and on Sunday, visitors to the mall can look forward to more fashion shows, with clothes from brands like Marks & Spencer and Esprit, and jewellery from Citigems.

There will be more dessert demonstrations, too, with visitors getting to see how to prepare strawberries with balsamic vinegar, black pepper and vanilla ice cream.

From now until Aug 12, there are also tonnes of promotional foodie and fashion deals - from $9.90 set lunches at eateries like Dome, Ajisen Ramen and Toby's The Dessert Asylum, to discounts or freebies with purchases at stores like Utopia and Bossini.

"We are trying to gel together food and fashion, because generally they are what attract the most crowds to Parkway.

"We are constantly revamping our food and fashion mix to reach out to shoppers," said Ms Stephanie Poh, general manager of Parkway Parade.

Savoury & Stylish is on until Aug 12 at Parkway Parade (95 Marine Parade Road). Visit www.parkwayparade.com.sg for more details.
