Newscaster on drug charge due to be married next week

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: The 26 people, including a newscaster with Astro Awani and a part-time actress, detained during a New Year’s day raid will now be investigated for using and possession of drugs.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Ku Chin Wah said police would investigate the case for drugs as no sexual acts were committed at the purported sex party. All were intoxicated but still clothed when arrested, he said.

Urine tests on the newscaster, actress and seven others, all aged between 20 and 30, were positive for Ecstasy and ketamine. Police said further tests would be conducted at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The newscaster was identified as Farahrizan Abdul Razak, 22, with Astro Awani channel by Malaysian newspaper, The Star. She is said to be a popular face on the 24-hour news channel and is due to be married next week.

The actress, 25, is also a scriptwriter and has played a role in a movie made by a famous director. The identities of the others were not revealed.

She and the other eight were among 26 revellers between the ages of 18 and 31 who were nabbed when police gate-crashed the New Year Eve's party at a serviced apartment in Jalan P. Ramlee here about 3.30am on Thursday.

Various drugs, including cocaine and syabu, were found when police stormed a room on the 11th floor of a hotel in Jalan P. Ramlee at 3.30am on Thursday.

Malaysian police are also trying to find out who supplied the party with drugs.

However, they will not go ahead with pressing sex charges against the party-goers as it is confirmed that no sex party has taken place.

The party was planned by a newly-wed couple via Friendster, an online social networking site through which the partygoers got to know one another.

City narcotics chief Asst Comm Kang Chez Chiang said the 26 have been remanded until tomorrow to facilitate investigations.

It was also reported that the group had met earlier at a nightspot in Mont Kiara before adjourning to the serviced apartment.
