JOHOR BARU - A woman who was reportedly abducted by her lover early this month is back with her family.
Wong Yoke Mooi, 35, returned home after her boyfriend, in his 40s, agreed he would woo her in the "proper" way to show he loved her, her family said.
Wong, who is said to have the mental capacity of a 10-year-old, was allegedly abducted by a man known only as Teoh on July 7.
It was reported that the mechanic from Kota Tinggi had come to Wong's house in Taman Tampoi Indah here to take her out on a date.
Wong's younger sister had insisted on going with them but the man, instead, bundled the elder woman in his car and drove off.
Five days after she did not return home, Wong's mother Poon Kwan Thai, 54, sought the media's help to trace her daughter.
Furthermore, the family was worried that Wong would miss her medication which she has to take daily for her condition and for depression.
Yesterday, Poon told reporters that her week-long nightmare over her mentally disabled daughter had ended.
"My daughter has taken her medication again," she said at a press conference organised by PKR legal bureau head Jimmy Phuah.
She added she was thankful and relieved that Wong was now back with the family.
Relating events that led to Wong's return, Phuah said he received lots of calls from concerned people after the news broke that she had gone missing.
"One of the callers was a man claiming to be Teoh's housemate," said Phuah, adding they then worked out an arrangement for Wong's family to meet her and Teoh on Friday.
The caller had claimed Wong and Teoh were in love with each other and wanted to elope.
"During the hour-long emotional meeting, we managed to convince Teoh to let her go and advised him to court Wong in the proper manner, including getting her mother's consent," said Phuah.
