Johor slams door on Obedient Wives Club
by Mohd Farhaan Shah and Isabelle Lai

Johor Baru, Malaysia: The Obedient Wives Club is not welcome in Johor because it is giving the wrong message and degrading to women, said state Women, Family, Health and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai.

She said the club, which had proposed "sex lessons" for women to keep their husbands, was also an insult to the family institution.

She also questioned why no club had been set up for husbands whose extra-marital affairs were usually the reason for broken marriages.

"It is not fair to blame divorces entirely on the wives," she said in an interview here yesterday.

"In many cases, the husbands are the ones who have the affairs."

Dr Robia said men sought prostitutes to satisfy their lust and not because their wives were not good enough in bed.

"Maybe it's the husbands who cannot perform in the bedroom," she said, urging them to seek medical attention.

On Monday, Perak mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria backed the club, adding that more should be set up around the country.

The club had offered sex lessons to help wives "serve their husbands better than first-class prostitutes", adding that a man kept happy in the bedroom would have no reason to stray, seek out prostitutes or indulge in other social vices.

Meanwhile, Facebook group We Do Not Want Sexist Nonsense From Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd has gained a staggering 2,613 members in just four days.

Founder Matthew Ong said there were plans to campaign via social media to lobby the Government to shut down the club, adding that it would work with various groups, including White Ribbon Malaysia.

"The club's teachings are definitely sexist, degrading and insulting to women across the globe," he said in an open letter to group members yesterday, adding that initial efforts to engage club vice-president Dr Rohaya Mohamad had been unsuccessful.

Ong, who is currently studying in Australia, urged members to defend the rights of mothers, sisters and friends everywhere.

"I believe a lot of you will agree that you don't want to see your loved ones treated like a sex worker, sex object or a first-class prostitute," he said.
