Inline skating instructor crowned Bride of Singapore
by Vanessa Valerie Tay

A 21-year-old inline skating instructor has been crowned Bride of Singapore 2011/12 on Friday afternoon, Dec 9, at Riverview Hotel.

Standing at 1.72m, the all-rounded Kuek Ziyi, who is also a model and graphic designer, beat 13 other contestants in this year's pageant and will represent Singapore in the Bride of the World pageant in September next year, set to be held in Macau.

Along with her experience in modelling, Ms Kuek's previous pageant experiences also played a big part in helping her win this pageant.

Ms Kuek is the winner of Miss Singapore Southeast Asia 2010, and was among the top five in the Miss Singapore Universe 2010 and Miss Singapore World 2010, winning for herself several subsidiary titles along with it.

When asked about which segment she found the most challenging, she said that the Q&A segment was her weakness, and added that she spent a lot of time practicing by going through questions that were asked in pageants in the past.

The contestants were assessed on three segments, which included Cocktail Dress, Evening Gown and Bridal Gown. The top five were then picked to go through the final Q&A segment.

All the finalists will participate in Chingay 2012 as ambassadors of the social ideal for marriage and family.

On the topic of marriage, Ms Kuek, who has a boyfriend, thinks that it is a miracle that happens to two people who are devoted to spend the rest of their lives together.

She also added that it is "hard to find a true partner", which makes marriage even more of a miracle.

For winning this pageant, Ms Kuek was rewarded with a cash prize of $5,000 and other attractive prizes, including a $5,000 modelling contract, $2,300 worth of health products, $600 skin and body treatment and a one-year membership with Real Yoga that is worth $1,700, just to name a few.

The pageant was co-organised by the People's Association's Family Life Section to encourage marriages and promote family life.
