Barbie ties the knot

IN DECEMBER, she denied that she would be having her wedding ceremony in March.

Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu even claimed she was so busy with work that she would think about her impending nuptials only after Chinese New Year this year.

But it turns out she had been lying through her teeth.

Hsu, 34, tied the knot with Chinese tycoon Wang Xiaofei in a lavish ceremony on Tuesday.

Mr Wang, 29, is a wealthy restaurateur and the heir of China's high-end South Beauty restaurant chain.

The couple have pledged all the money they received from their well-wishers to the victims of Japan's recent earthquake and tsunami.

Hsu and Mr Wang had just been on holiday in Japan last month with Mr Wang's mother, Ms Zhang Lan.

The newlyweds did not disclose the exact amount they received, but judging from the stars who were at their wedding, it would not have been a small amount.

On Tuesday, Taiwanese celebrities like Christine Fan, A-Ya and Pace Wu, along with members of the media, arrived in Sanya, south China, for the wedding.

By invite only

However, most of the reporters were barred from the reception, which was held in the Conrad Sanya Hotel's outdoor garden.

The wedding was an invitation-only event hosted by Taiwanese TV host Kevin Tsai.

The two daughters of Hsu's younger sister, Taiwanese TV host Dee, were the flower girls.

The couple's rings were a gift from a friend and designed by Ms Zhang's goddaughter.

The lavish ceremony, which was attended by about 200 guests, saw Hsu in three different outfits.

Mr Wang took to the stage, serenading his wife with popular Mandopop singer Faye Wong's song, Legend.

Crooners A-mei, Na Ying and Christine Fan also performed a few songs for the newlyweds.

In her wedding speech, Hsu said: "I had originally wanted to remain single to keep my mother company, but I never expected to meet my Mr Right in Beijing."

True love and big bucks

The younger Hsu also gave a touching speech, saying that seeing her sister find true love was better than finding fame and fortune.

She then joked: "Of course, earning big bucks is a must too."

Hsu had reportedly met Mr Wang, who is five years younger than her, in September.

The couple had only known each other for a total of 165 days before their wedding on Tuesday.

In October, Hsu caused waves in the Asian entertainment scene when she announced that she had accepted Mr Wang's proposal.

The couple registered their marriage last November after a whirlwind courtship.

For months, fans and critics engaged in heated debate on whether her gold-digging ways had finally got the better of her.

There were also reports that she was pregnant and that the wedding was a shotgun wedding.

At the post-wedding party, both Hsu's mother-in-law and Dee denied that Hsu was pregnant.

Said Ms Zhang: "There isn't any baby. But if they decide to have kids, I have my own business, so I'm too busy to look after them.

"Let them bring up their kids themselves."
