Making sacrifices for the kids

By reader Irene Yeo

THIS refers to "Give up my career for my kids? Well..." (The New Paper on Sunday, Oct 17) and "Sacrificing for children's sake" (The New Paper, Oct 21).

Many parents have made sacrifices for their children in one way or the other. Allow me to share my personal experience regarding the matter.

Myhusband gave up his real estate career - which brought him a very comfortable income - to look after our baby girl, who was born prematurely with a birth weight of 900g.

She was also born outside the womb in what's known as an ectopic pregnancy.

Give up my career for my kids? Well...

It was a huge effort for my husband to look after such a small baby.

Even my mother-in-law, who has lots of experience looking after many children and grandchildren, told us that she did not feel confident when she first saw our daughter in the incubator in the hospital.

Today, our daughter is a healthy and normal 14- year-old.

Whenever my mother-in-law looks at her, she tells relatives how surprised she is that her son was able to handle such a miracle baby.

This is thanks to my loving husband for his great effort for several years as a full-time homemaker. But there were sacrifices.

We had accumulated the 5Cs - cash, credit card, car, condominium and country club - before our daughter was born, but had to give them up after she was born.

We gave up our car for a bicycle, which my husband used to run errands, and a condominium apartment for a three-bedroom HDB flat as we went from dual-income to a single-income household.

We also gave up our country club membership and credit cards altogether.

I often ask myself how many men can make such sacrifices and would love to hear of men who made even bigger sacrifices than my loving husband.
