Landy gets a tan to hide her marks
by Charlene Chua

WHAT’S unique about Landy Wen’s new clothing line is that it features only one-piece ensembles.

Why no mix-and-match pieces?

Ask the Taiwanese singer and she will tell you that her sexy, tight-fitting dresses and jumpers are designed for “lazy beauties” – women who just want to dress-up-and-go.

But the irony is that Wen herself isn’t at all lazy in taking care of her looks.

The 31-year-old singer told The New Paper over the phone from Taiwan: “I’m very afraid of looking ugly. I think I take after my mother who is very vain.

“I remember when I was one or two years old, I used to get excited whenever she would...mimic putting make-up on my face. I loved that.”

Wen added that before she goes to bed every night, she puts a lot of hydrating lotion on her face and body.

This is because she tans herself regularly at the tanning salon, which makes her skin susceptible to dryness.

And the reason she chooses to have darker skin than the prized fair skin among Taiwanese girls is also linked to vanity.

Fair skin

Wen revealed that she was born with very fair and thin skin.

Because of this, purplish blood vessels were visible all over her body.

This affected her so much that when she was doing the photoshoot for her first album Sixth Sense 10 years ago, she applied make-up all over her body to hide the blood vessels.

Among Wen’s many beauty routines is an exercise that slims her waist to make her chest appear more ample in comparison.

She also does a lot to combat edema, which she is prone to. Edema is a condition which causes swelling due to water retention in the body.

She said that she dances for many hours at a time so that she will sweat all the excess water.

She also visits the spa fortnightly for massages and “hot treatments” which induce perspiration to drain out the toxins in her body.

“I’m a girl so naturally, I want to be beautiful,” she said.

With her new fashion label that was launched exclusively in Malaysia last month, Wen said she has finally achieved one part of her dream to sell her apparel internationally.

“I chose to launch my clothes only in Malaysia first as the designers that I worked with are Malaysian.

“For women who wonder whether it’s difficult to go to the toilet wearing a one-piece outfit, it’s not. There are zippers and openings at the sides of the clothes for ‘easy access’.”

The successful launch of her clothing line comes as a relief to the pop sensation as she had originally wanted to release her next album at the end of the year.

However, due to problems she faced in the “creative” process, she has been unable to choose enough songs that she is satisfied with for the album.

The direction of her album has also yet to be confirmed.

But she can take heart that she will be performing at I Love Asia Pop! – Singapore’s inaugural Asian music festival – which consists of two nights of different acts.

On Dec 4, it’s Mnet Ultimate Live! with Korean acts such as Miss A, Mblaq, 2AM and 2PM.

On Dec 5, it’s I Love Chinese Pop! and, apart from Wen, the Mandarin acts include Guang Liang, Van Fan and Harlem Yu.

Wen will be the only female performer that night, and to up her game against the guys, she will be performing a 15-minute non-stop freestyle dance routine.

“It’s a medley of songs that consists of my own original songs and covers. I will also be doing some moves from Madonna’s Vogue.

“I’m rehearsing in four-hour sessions now, up to three times a week. It’s very tiring but I hope that when I actually perform the dance, I won’t be so breathless,” she said.
