Asian divas fall flat on the red carpet

When it comes to working the red carpet, Asia's music divas still have a bit of catching up to do with their Western counterparts.

This year's Golden Melody Awards - Taiwan's equivalent of the Grammys - held in Taipei on July 6 was a mixed bag high notes and off-keys.

No doubt there were pretty ladies all round, but where's the attitude?

Instead of the ladies, all eyes at the 24th Golden Melody Awards at the Taipei Arena were on the industry's highest-profile celebrity ex-couples.

There were no less than three pairs of ex-es at the glitzy affair - and two even stepped out in public together.

Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou, 34, and pop princess Jolin Tsai, 32, who famously dated in the early noughties, were the most hotly-watched of the night.

When they appeared on stage to present the Best Mandarin Male Vocalist accolade, shrieks filled the air.

The audience was pleasantly surprised as Chou had confirmed his attendance only hours before the awards ceremony began.

Despite having not appeared on stage together in three years, Chou and Tsai demonstrated an easy chemistry.

Alumni of Taiwanese reality TV singing competition One Million Star Lala Hsu and Li Bo-en were also not spared scrutiny. The pair split in 2009 after Li cheated on Hsu.

Awkwardness was also the order of the day for Taiwanese singer-songwriter Lala Hsu and comical rapper Li Bo-en.

As fate would have it, Li, 32, was part of the red carpet hosting team and had to interview Hsu when she arrived.

After Hsu, 28, replied to questions with disinterested one-liners, Li turned to his co-hosts in mock exasperation saying: "I think she doesn't want to talk to me."

Taiwanese crooner Yoga Lin, 26, and Hong Kong pop star G.E.M Tang's lovey-dovey hand-holding down the red carpet also had fans confused.

The pair were said to have split up early last year but were spotted holidaying in New York in May

"We've always been great partners in music, so I felt it would be nice to walk the red carpet together this time. We can encourage each other," Lin told the red carpet hosts.

However, some Asian stars have shown that they have no problem turning the heat up on the red carpet.

Our very own Singapore rep Tanya Chua, 38, may kill it when it comes to collecting music awards, but she's not exactly winning the style stakes.

I have to disagree with your caption about Asian Divas falling flat. The pics are Taiwanese/HK/China/Spore divas but they certainly are not in the same league with those from Bollywood. Bollywood divas will have the same if not higher catwalk profile than those you have depicted here.
