Off-key at Golden Melody
by Jeanmarie Tan

When it comes to working the red carpet, Asia's music divas still have a bit of catching up to do with their Western counterparts.

This year's Golden Melody Awards - Taiwan's equivalent of the Grammys - held in Taipei on July 6 was a mixed bag high notes and off-keys.

No doubt there were pretty ladies all round, but where's the attitude?

1. I've never seen Taiwanese singer-actress Christine Fan, 37, look this elegant - or this tall.

Her black floral Leonard Paris long-sleeve gown with sheer panel down the bodice and thigh-high side slit was taken up a notch with the perfect accessories (Jimmy Choo neon yellow-and-black strappy sandals and blackand- gold lace print acrylic clutch).

As my best-dressed of the night, Fan's outfit had the right amount of chinoiserie and edge.

2. Taiwanese pop star and fashionista Jolin Tsai, 32, would've easily topped my list in this gold honeycomb Alexander McQueen strapless bustier mini-dress and shimmering gold tights - had she not ruined it with tacky, clunky T-bar black-and-gold platform sandals.

3. Malaysian singer Fish Leong, 35, literally followed in Tsai's footsteps when it came to getting it wrong in the shoe department.

Her pale gold pleated Lanvin gown with plunging neckline and metallic geometric Bulgari clutch were fine on their own.

But in what universe do they belong with those garish pewter snakeskin Christian Louboutin stacked platform Mary Janes fit for a drag queen?

Maybe in Lady Gaga's. And Leong is no Lady Gaga.

4. Our very own Singapore rep Tanya Chua, 38, may kill it when it comes to collecting music awards, but she's not exactly winning the style stakes.

Compared to the sleek glamazons around her, she looked a tad underdressed and unpolished in this yellow Tory Burch sleeveless V-neck printed maxi dress accessorised with a distracting and totally unnecessary red tasselled necklace.

Save such resort outfits and bedhead hair for the beach, please.
