Taiwanese teens spend more time online than with family

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Local teenagers spend much more time accessing websites than dealing with their family members, according to findings of a survey conducted by the Taipei Women's Rescue Foundation (TWRF).

The TWRF surveyed junior high school students between September 2009 and April 2010 concerning their online activities, with the number of effective responses hitting a high of 1,781.

Junior high students spent an average of 6.2 hours per week on the Internet world, and over 30 percent of them spent more than the average time online.

It was also found that 52 percent of the surveyed students engaged in leisure activities together with their family members per week, compared to 10 percent, which have never jointly engaged in such activities with family members.

Meanwhile, over 50 percent of the polled spent less than half a hour chatting with family members.

Furthermore, around 10 percent of teenagers polled voiced their support for the concept that “As long as I like, there is nothing that I cannot do.”

For instance, some junior high students liked to place campus bullying pictures on their blogs, aiming to arouse attention to the blogs, regardless of whether such a practice has violated relevant laws or not.

Around 75 percent of junior high students polled have set up their blogs, and the ratio of female students owning blogs is larger than that of male students.

Executives with the TWRF called for students not to spread sex or bullying pictures or films, lest they should commit the crimes of slander or undermining confidentiality of others.
