How to wear chunky jewellery
by Ian Lee

Q I'm used to wearing dainty jewellery but would like to start experimenting with bigger, bolder pieces. What would you recommend?

A Layered silver necklaces, statement cocktail rings or gemstone cuffs go a long way in dressing up basic looks.

The general rule is not to pair these accessories with complicated outfits that feature a lot of fussy details or loud prints.

Also, steer clear of wearing too many large jewellery pieces at one time because that spells overkill. Stick to one chunky piece per outfit.

There are many places where you can find big statement pieces at affordable prices.

High-street haven Topshop, for instance, has ethnic chic multi-coloured bangles for $39, dreamcatcher earrings for $29 and cocktail rings in jewel tones for $23.

Australian accessories brand Mimco is also a good place to look. Go rock chic with the brand's studded Mad Max Cuff for $190 or pair your evening look with the store's Python Opal ring (left), also for $190.

The limited-edition Queen Of Pearls necklace (right), a real statement piece, is $520.
