How your family can save you $20,000 in tax rebates

As the deadline for filing your taxes draw nearer (Apr 15 if you file your tax returns form on paper, Apr 18 if you e-file), don’t forget you are entitled to family-related tax rebates.

Here’s the breakdown:
Parent Relief
How much?
For the year of assessment 2010, you can claim $7,000, if you are staying with your parents or $4,500 if you do not stay with them.

If you have handicapped parents, you can claim $11,000 if you stay with them, or $8,000 if you do not stay with them.

Relief can be claimed for up to two dependants.

Are you eligible?
You can claim this relief if you supported your or your spouse's parents, grandparents and great grandparents in the previous year.

You must also satisfy all the following requirements:
-    Your parents or grandparents must be aged 55 and above and living in Singapore in the previous year.
-    If you lived away from them, you must incur $2,000 or more supporting them.
-    Your parents or grandparents should not have income such as salary or tax exempt income such as bank interest, dividend and pension exceeding $2,000 in the previous year.
-    You cannot claim on your parents if your sibling claims relief on the same parent.

You can still claim tax relief on a parent who has passed away in the previous year, provided you satisfy all the requirements above.

Spouse Relief
How much?
Previously known as wife relief, this is now expanded to allow working wives to claim if their spouses stay at home to look after the family.

Either spouse can claim up to $2,000.

Are you eligible?
Yes, if you satisfy the following conditions:
-    Your spouse earned less than $4,000 last year
-    He or she was living with or supported by you
-    You have not claimed handicapped spouse relief or no one else is claiming any relief (other than grandparent caregiver relief) on your spouse or ex-wife.

This relief also applies to spouses who are legally separated or divorced.

Grandparent Caregiver Relief
How much?
You may claim $3,000 on one parent or grandparent if you are a working mother, regardless of whether you have claimed Parent Relief on the same parent.

Are you eligible?
- Yes, if you are a working mother who is married, divorced or widowed, AND
- The parent or grandparent you are claiming this relief on is living in Singapore, has looked after your child or children who are Singapore citizens, and is 12 years old or younger and not working in the previous year.

Working Mother’s Child Relief
How much?
15 per cent of the mother’s earned income for the first child, 20 per cent for the second kid and 25 per cent each for the third and subsequent kids.

Mums can claim WMCR up to 100 per cent of their earned income for all her qualifying children.

Are you eligible?
Yes, if you are a working mum who is a Singaporean taxpayer and have a child who is Singapore citizen as at 31 Dec of previous year.

Parenthood Tax Rebate
How much?
Parenthood tax rebate can be used to offset income tax payable, and can be shared by both spouses based on apportionment agreed by both parties.

You can claim $5,000 for the first child, $10,000 for the second child and $20,000 for each subsequent child.

Are you eligible?
Yes, if your child is a Singapore citizen born on or after Jan 1, 2008. You may also claim this relief on adopted children.
