Follicular pampering
by Kalwant Kaur

AS A regular traveller to Malaysia, I am well aware of the benefits of Neeta's Herbal hair treatments, which attracts hordes of beauty-conscious women to its outlets in Johor Baru.

Hence, I was delighted to be invited to try it when the brand set up shop in Singapore.

After convincing my boss that this was part of the job, I walked into the Novena Square 2 outlet on a weekday morning and placed my tresses in the capable hands of Ms Hamsavathi.

A hair therapist with many years of experience, she first briefed me on the treatment process, which would last about 11/2 hours and be conducted in four steps.

She added that it is totally safe as only herbs and the ayurveda method are used.

The treatment began with the high-frequency machine which made me feel like I was getting mild electric shocks on my scalp.

Seeing my worried look, Ms Hamsavathi assured me that it would help to improve blood circulation and get rid of the dandruff (not that I had any!).

The next step was the oil massage, which I enjoyed very much.

Her very special technique of massaging the mineral oil, imported from India, into my scalp – it is meant to stimulate hair growth – was so relaxing that I almost started snoring.

All thoughts of sleep quickly vanished when the next stage started: Steaming, to open the pores and let the hair absorb moisture and thereby nourish it from within. This is said to prevent hair loss.

Lastly, it was time for the application of Amla, or the hair mask. This cooling paste is applied to the roots to absorb the heat from the body and promote hair growth.

Ms Hamsavathi reminded me that, like our skin, our hair gets damaged from frequent colouring and exposure to the sun. Hence she recommends the regular application of the hair mask.

To wrap up the session, she shampooed my hair and left me feeling like a million dollars.

Not only had my usually unruly hair become soft and manageable, I felt refreshed and light on my feet.
