Newspapers the best way to say it with love

In a world saturated with online social media, expressing her love through the newspapers is still the best.

That's according to Rabiatul Adaweyah, the winner of this year's CATS Classified Valentine's Lovelines.

The 26-year-old part-time property agent feels that newspaper announcements express a sense of permanency that mirrors her unchanging love for her boyfriend of two years, Muhammad Nur Bin Falim, whom she affectionately calls "Farhan".

Ironically, she met Farhan through online social networking media. Rabiatul plans to cut out her newspaper dedication and keep it for a lifetime.

As someone who frequently reads and advertises in CATS Classifieds, Ms Rabiatul finds it "an effective platform", and expresses appreciation for "value-added content such as articles and features".

When it came to expressing her heartfelt devotion to her boyfriend, it seemed only natural that she would go back to the same platform that has served her so well over the years.

Figures filed by CATS support Ms Rabiatul's sentiments. Despite competition from online media such as SMS, email and social networking websites, the number of entries has steadily increased from about 700 in 2001 to almost 1,500 this year.

Print media is widely perceived as an ideal platform for public announcement to the world at large, and this explains why they have remained popular.

Using her nickname "Era", Ms Rabiatul penned a loving dedication for her boyfriend, and it was picked out as the sole winning entry through a lucky draw. When CATS Classified informed her that she had won a 5D/3N trip for two to Maldives, she was delighted since it was a destination that Farhan and her have planned for their honeymoon.

Valentine's Lovelines is an annual in-paper promotion organised by CATS Classified, and runs in The Straits Times, The New Paper and Lianhe Zaobao. Dedications sent in by readers will be published on February 12.
