Fun, new ways to date

1 Not just puppy love
What: Your dog is your best friend, so why not let it sniff out the love of your life? Dating agency Love Me Love My Dog mixes up finding love with obedience training (of your pooch, that is), so you know for sure that the hot guy with his golden retriever is single. Best of all, you get to swap animal anecdotes and training tips – all the better for cosy tete-a-tetes.

What’s it like: “I get to see another side to the men, many of whom were teachers and bankers. They might act all macho, but go absolutely gaga over puppies. And if their dogs are well groomed, it also reflects their sense of responsibility. I went on dates with a few of them and they were more sincere than the men I met at other events.” – Joan Lee, 28, flight stewardess

Where: Various locations

Next session January. Each two-hour session accommodates 20 people.
Cost Sign up as a member before taking part – membership starts from $399.

2 Tee for two
What: Don’t know your birdies from your bogeys? Pick up the game of golf – and have fun while you’re at it – with the Golf Beginner Programme for the Fun-Loving and Successful Singles. You’ll learn the basics from Jason Tan, president of the American Golf Teachers’ Federation. After a day on the driving range, have a drink and compare your scores with the men. And even if you don’t find someone within the group, it’ll equip you to hit the range, which is always teeming with men.

What’s it like: “This is much better than other dating events I’ve attended because I picked up a new skill and made a lot of friends. Most of the guys were in IT. With the golf lesson as a conversation starter, we were able to chat without feeling awkward.” – Effin Ang, 36, accountant

Where: JTGolf Academy, #02-02, 601 Sin Ming Avenue

Next session Jan 9, 2-5pm
Cost: $39.50 (for non-members). Each session hosts 30 people.

3 Let’s burn some rubber, baby
What: If car-pooling makes you think of cranky strangers stuck in a traffic jam on their way to work, think again – it might just be where you find your true love. Fifteen couples take to the road in Romance On Wheels, a road trip around Singapore to the best hawker centres and scenic corners this island has to offer. Plus, you switch cars after every stop so everyone gets to interact.

What’s it like: “At any one time, four people are packed into a car and the cosy environment encourages conversation. The men come from a variety of professions, and they were spontaneous and fun. I really enjoyed it – I met new people while discovering parts of Singapore I’ve never been to. I’m signing up for the next one.” – Jacklyn Tan, 28, administrative assistant

Where: Around the island

Next session: May 1, 10am-4pm
Cost: You need to be a member – membership fees start from $50 plus a $35 event fee. Each session hosts 30 people.
