Jaime Teo: My chest grew bigger
by Germaine Lim

THEY have been married for two years, and now radio deejay Daniel Ong and TV host-actress Jaime Teo are expecting their first child in April.

Turns out, they found out about the pregnancy in an “embarrassing” way.

A shy Jaime told The New Paper: “My chest grew bigger. So I went for a check-up. That was when I found out. Dan didn’t believe it. He had to buy two home pregnancy test kits to confirm it.”

Daniel, 33, joked: “The kits are actually quite fun to play with, you know.”

They will find out the baby’s sex in early November, though they have no preference.

Daniel hopes the baby will inherit Jaime’s good looks, while Jaime wants the child to get her hubby’s wit and humour.

The couple said they have been thinking of starting a family but were allowing nature to take its course.

Just five months ago, in an interview with The New Paper, Jaime had said she wasn’t prepared for motherhood.

She clarified: “Unless one is actually expecting a baby, I don’t think anyone can ever be ready for parenthood. There are so many unknowns.”

But these concerns become insignificant as the proud parents-to-be witness the baby’s development.

Jaime said: “During one of my pre-natal check-ups, we saw the baby clenching and unclenching fingers. Dan wanted to cry. It’s amazing. I can’t explain it. It’s never as wonderful when people tell you until you experience it yourself.”

She recently returned to showbiz after a two-year break, joining Irene Ang’s stable of artistes at Fly Entertainment.

But now her work may have to be put on hold, and she may even become a stay-home mum after the baby is born.

I feel like queen

Jamie gets tired more easily.

And though usually a foodie, her appetite is weak.

Still, her first trimester is over, and she is waiting for the fatigue and nausea to subside. “I crave for all the foods I didn’t used to like, such as fast food and fizzy drinks.

I can’t stomach things I used to love, like salads and fish. Fish makes me nauseous.”

Though she has gained just 1kg, Jaime said she feels pudgy and has given up wearing tight clothes.

She has stopped doing one of her favourite pastimes, playing badminton, and has settled for a stationary bike at the gym to keep fit.

“There’s no chance of falling off,” she joked.

Jaime is also savouring this time when everyone’s “super nice to me”.

“My mother-in-law makes bird’s nest soup for me. When I play mahjong with friends, they refuse to let me carry chairs. I feel like a queen. I’m definitely savouring this period.”

According to Daniel, Jaime is also whining more.

But the loving husband is taking it all in his stride by “trying my best to pamper her and make sure she eats well”.

He wants to increase his investment portfolio to “bring home more bacon”.

And they plan to go overseas more before the third trimester because “traveling with a baby is going to be so different”.

They are going to Japan this weekend. Another trip is in the works at year-end.

They are getting a house built and intend to move in next year.

Daniel has the job of decorating the nursery room.

He said: “I want to make it into a fairy tale room with rainbows and castles on walls. I’ll try to paint them myself, though I’m not a very good artist.”

There’s no question who will spoil the kid.

Daniel said: “Jaime will definitely be the disciplinarian.

“Me? If I see the child rolling on the grass, I’ll probably join in too.”
