Ex-beauty queen cannot shop alone
by Dawn Tay

DETHRONED Miss Singapore World Ris Low has been barred from shopping alone.

A district court ordered that she be accompanied by a relative when shopping. It was among stricter terms imposed on her yesterday, in a regular review of her progress during her 24 months' probation.

She was placed on probation in May for credit-card fraud, and she gave up her crown last Wednesday, a week after her conviction was made public.

Yesterday, the court also ordered her to continue with psychiatric treatment and counselling for bipolar disorder, a diagnosis made after she was placed on probation.

She agreed to comply with the additional terms of her probation order, which District Judge May Mesenas told her
were "safeguards to prevent you from re-offending".

Her appeal to travel to South Africa for the Miss World pageant was to have been heard yesterday. But it has been dropped since she had resigned, said her lawyer, Mr Sng Kheng Huat.

my paper understands that as part of the appeal, pageant organiser ERM World Marketing had written to her probation officer to seek permission for her to travel. The letter, which appears to have been signed by ERM event director Tracy Lee, was dated Aug 18 - more than a month before my paper broke the news of her conviction.

ERM had earlier told The New Paper that it did not know about her conviction until the media broke the news. Miss Low initially said that she told ERM about her offence after being crowned, but later agreed with ERM that she did so after it made the headlines.

my paper understands that she is on a year's contract with ERM. When contacted, ERM declined comment.
