Ris Low wants to run beauty pageant
by Terrence Voon

She gave up her crown three months ago, after her credit card conviction came to light.

Now former Miss Singapore Ris Low is eyeing a comeback – as a beauty pageant organiser. The 19-year-old, who sparked a nationwide uproar earlier this year with her poor diction, is looking for sponsors for an as yet- unnamed three-in-one beauty pageant.

Last week, she sent out an e-mail message to potential sponsors, such as malls and event organisers, spelling out details for the proposed event in the middle of next year.

The selling point, she wrote, is that three winners will be crowned at the same event – Miss Singapore, Mr Singapore and Mrs Singapore.

Never mind that all three titles are currently being used by other pageants. Ms Low is confident her “grand national event” will be a hit.

She said in the e-mail: “It has a unique and special marketing concept as the show/event will have a contrast of the Gorgeous Young Lady, Hulky Dashing Man, Beautiful Married Woman.”

The winners will go on to compete at international pageants next July, she added. Part of the proceeds from the event will go to charity.

When contacted by The Sunday Times, she declined to elaborate on her plans, saying that she will give more information when she is ready. She also did not want to say if any sponsors have expressed interest so far.

Ms Low was crowned Miss Singapore in July but was widely flamed for mispronouncing words in a now-famous interview on RazorTV, a video news site owned by Singapore Press Holdings.

She gave up her title in September after it was revealed that she had been convicted of credit card fraud while working as a clinic assistant last year.

She had swiped seven credit cards belonging to patients, using them to pay for nearly $8,000 worth of gold anklets, cellphones, lingerie and expensive meals.

Despite the bad press, words like “boomz” and “shingz” which she had made up were quickly added to the local vernacular. She now wants to use them to her advantage.

“I feel with the current hype over ‘boomz’, ‘shingz’ and the various Ris Low news, it will be great publicity for the event,” she wrote in the e-mail.

Ms Low, who has kept a low profile for several weeks, now seems intent on re-capturing her place in the public eye.

Her blog, for instance, has doubled as a marketing tool as well as a window into her life.

In an entry dated Dec 3, she revealed that she had found a new job – as an assistant at a clinic in Boon Keng.

She is also offering grooming lessons for beauty queen hopefuls and is searching for Web advertisers as well as sponsors for her pageant.

“Rest assured I won’t steal your credit cards,” she quipped.
