Not perfect, but she's our best hope
by Yeoh Wee Teck

IN A matter of days, Miss Singapore World Ris Low went from a 'boomz' bikini sensation to a cautionary tale of burying the skeletons in your closet before parading on stage.

It's a leaky world, dear.

So, don't expect past indiscretions to remain discreet in this day and age.

I'll admit that I too was laughing merrily at the antics at first.

I even did a rather wicked and spot-on impersonation of Miss Singapore World's garbled train-wreck of an interview.

But now, I'm feeling kind of sorry for her.

I'd met her when she was among the top 24 finalists of The New Paper New Face 2009 contest.

To her credit, she behaved like a potential beauty queen.

Her back was always straight, her ankles crossed and her knees seldom more than an inch apart.

A smile remained frozen on her face and she nodded more than she spoke.

Check, check and check.

Ris came across as a nice girl.

But she withdrew from the New Face contest when she felt she had a better chance of winning the Miss Singapore World title.

Shrewd move. She knew where she would find more fame, and she went straight for it.

But things can backfire. Boomz. Now she is paying the price.

Ris was just 17 when she committed the offence. Youthful recklessness and stupidity?

That was a crazy age for many of us. Can we all, hand on heart, say we were squeaky clean then?

So let's be practical, folks.

Is this a morality contest or beauty parade?

And if you've taken a close look at the other finalists, you'll know that Ris is about as good as it gets.

She is not perfect. But she is our best hope.

She is paying her dues. So lighten up.

Our Singapore representatives need not be squeaky clean.

Sometimes a past blemish can help a person to gain character. Just don't ask Ris to plead her case verbally.

That would be disastrous. Boomz, really.

How contradictory all these reports can be !
Since she has been declared by our journalist that she is our best hope & now that Miss Low has given up her crown, then I think there is no need to look for a replacement. So I advise the organisers not to waste time further.

If Ms Ris Low is the only hope, does it mean that all the rest of the contestants were really bad?

Forget about her past crime she did but how can we accept someone who cannot speaks well to represent our country? For the sake of others Singaporean ladies, please do not disgrace us.

Imagine the headlines: 'Miss World (from Singapore) - aka Credit Card fraud'.

That will be the day!

Some people really pitied Ris a lot. Maybe they think that Miss World Singapore pageant is only an entertainment show, so people should not be that serious about it. Let whoever interested goes ahead to represent Singapore in Miss World 2009.

Will Singapore send somebody who is interested and very confident in himself but actually not up to standard to join Olympics? I don't think so. So, I believe kindness should not compromise the qualifying standard in formal events or competition.

Hey typical_guy_Sg! item 4. of the terms and conditions:

The Contestant warrants he/she has not been charged or convicted in any court of law in any country and that he/she is not a fugitive nor is he/she wanted by any law enforcement agency.

It's not just the speaking well. It's lying about stealing credit cards from sick patients. Yeah, youthful indiscretion but what she did was not indiscretion. It was criminal. If Singaporeans can't see the difference as this writer does not, we will decay into another JB given this type of meme.

Yellow ribbon cannot be applied in all situations. You won't want to vote a criminal as your prime minister, don't you?

Even though I'm a true-blue singaporean, I am embarrassed to find our society becoming harsh and critical. That's a very sad trend. I wonder what my overseas friends will think if they read these condescending remarks over someone who at least had the guts to chase the limelight despite her past. So what if she can't present herself well? So what if she can't really speak well? If you think you can better the person, then sign up for the contest instead of bashing the lady thru your computers. And now that Ris has given up her title, lets just let this pass.

The on line application at http://www.ermworld.org/spore/htmdocs/entryform/entryform_step1.htm does not required applicants to indicate if they have ever been convicted with criminal!
