Hong Kong Chinese newspaper, Sing Pao Daily News, has reported that ex-actress Joey Wong has shorn her locks and become a nun.
Details revealed that she could have become a nun at a Canadian temple. She moved to Canada since retiring from the entertainment industry in 2004.
But this news has yet to be confirmed by Joey. Netizens have put up pictures on websites, showing a picture of a nun standing by a white car with her head shaved. They have claimed that the person in the picture is Joey, but the person in the picture cannot be clearly identified.
Joey Wong shot to fame after filming the Hong Kong movie, A Chinese Ghost story, and starred opposite Leslie Cheung.
Hong Kong radio host, Eileen Cha, was quoted as saying that her mentor in Vancouver was close to Joey, and she was certain that the
news cannot be false.
However, Joey's ex-beau and her mother have come out to say that they did not believe Joey had become a nun. Ex-beau Chyi Chin, who was in Shanghai when the news was relayed to him, was shocked.
He said: "I have not been in touch with Joey for a year, and did not hear about her becoming a nun. When I called her while I was in Canada last month, she was not contactable and did not return my call."
But Chyi Chin did speculate that Joey may have converted to Buddhism.
Joey's mother has also denied any truth to the report, but did say that her daughter was practising Buddhism back in Vancouver.
Friends who are close to the ex-actress have also confirmed that she may have adopted Buddhism as her religion, but it is unlikely that she would have become a nun. Taiwanese songwriter, Xu Changde, who is a close friend of Joey's, said that she treasures her long flowy tresses too much to shave it all off.
Unlucky in love and career
Joey Wong has been facing difficulties in both her career and personal life in recent years, according to a Shin Min Daily News report.
She had been dating singer Chyi Chin, but begana relationship with media mogul Peter Lam. However, their relationship did not get the approval of Peter's mother, and she was even humiliated by the latter in public. Joey eventually returned to Taiwan and reconciled with Chyi Chin.
As the couple were preparing for their wedding in 1999, news surfaced that Chin already had a live-in girlfriend, with whom he even had a child.
Later in 2000, director Yang Fan persuaded Joey to return to the silver screen to star in the movie, Peony Pavilion, which was not well-received by the public. She returned to Canada after that.
