Sensitive skin, yet doesn't use moisturiser or sunscreen
by Hong XinYi

Q My skin is so sensitive that it starts to burn even when I apply a moisturiser. This is why I do not use moisturiser or sunscreen and I wash my face with just soap. I am a 33-year-old stay-home mum. Do I need to use a moisturiser every day? Can you suggest a good one for me?

A Here is some advice from Dr Jean Ho, a consultant dermatologist from Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre. First, whenever you are out in the sun, it is best to apply sunscreen.

'From the age of 30, we will begin to notice uneven pigmentation on the skin, fine wrinkles, coarse pores and dull-looking complexion. These things are aggravated by ultra-violet rays from the sun,' Dr Ho explains.

If you are concerned about skin sensitivity, look for sunscreen products that are labelled 'for sensitive skin'.

These tend to contain UV-blocking ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are inert and thus less prone to causing allergic reactions.

As you age, skin also tends to become dryer as sebum production declines. So use a gentle cleanser, such as Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser ($11), which does not strip the skin of its natural protective barrier.

Your moisturiser of choice should be non-greasy and contain no fragrance and preservatives. Try Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion ($17, Photo 2), which also helps to repair damage caused to the outer skin layer.

Other brands that are free of artificial preservatives include Jurlique, an Australian brand that uses a high concentration of natural, plant-based ingredients, and Boscia, a Japan-based brand that makes extensive use of willow herb, an anti-irritant you may find soothing for your sensitive skin.
