Pulling her weight as a hot DJ choice
by Melissa Lwee

CONSIDERING that she grew up surrounded by music, Samantha Ronson's fall into the industry was as good as inevitable.

'I was raised around music all of my life - my stepdad (Mick Jones) is in the band Foreigner and music was always being played in my house,' says the British-born singer-songwriter and celebrity DJ who will be in Singapore for the first time tomorrow to DJ at Fuel, a party held at the F1 Pit Building, alongside other DJs such as Darren Emerson and Mr C.

'Nobody pushed me in this direction, I just sort of ended up doing what I love to do,' says the 31-year-old.

To complete the musical family tree, her brother Mark is the award-winning producer widely credited for making singer Amy Winehouse a success.

'I have an extremely talented family and we're all able to stand out on our own,' she points out, revealing that she's currently in the process of recording new songs to be released as an EP by the end of the summer.

Even without her family connections and career, Ronson herself maintains a high profile in the news, thanks to her recent rocky relationship with actress Lindsay Lohan, which made her fodder for the gossip mills.

Still, public scrutiny doesn't distract the enterprising Los Angeles-based artist who once co-owned the now defunct The Plumm, a New York City club, with other celebrities like actor Chris North and New Kids on the Block's Joey McIntyre. At the moment, she's also pulling her weight as a hot DJ choice for many celebrity parties and hangouts worldwide.

'I travel a lot so it can be difficult to find time but I love what I do,' she says, adding that her hobbies include the game Guitar Hero, Twitter and well, sleep.

For the party on Saturday though, Ronson plays coy and declines to give a sneak peak of any surprises up her sleeve but says she will aim to get the crowd working and dancing with her love of fun pop tunes.

'I love all kinds of pop music - from rock to hip hop and everything in between,' she says. 'I play the music that I would want to hear if I was in the crowd. I try and make sure I play something for everyone out there while putting my own spin on it.'

Samantha Ronson (www.samantharonson.com) will be spinning at Fuel which will take place at the F1 Pit Building on Saturday from 10pm onwards. For more information and ticketing purposes, please visit http://fuel.com.sg
