My foundation and concealer often emphasise the fine lines and furrows on my face. How do I prevent that from happening?
Mr Michel Coulombe, a global make-up artist at Laura Mercier, has perfected the art of creating a flawless-looking face with foundation, concealer, and a few deft moves.
Here, he shares his tricks.
1. Always start your make-up routine with skincare, such as applying a serum and moisturiser. It helps make-up last longer and sit better on your skin.
2. Use a primer to prevent your foundation from settling into the pores and fine lines. A pea-sized amount for the whole face will do. This step will also seal your skincare in and prevent the foundation from oxidising and turning a shade darker.
For primers, try Laura Mercier's Foundation Primer (photo), or Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer, $67, both from Sephora.
3. A little bit goes a long way. So pump a 10 cent coin-sized amount of foundation on the back of your hand and use a foundation sponge to pick up the product. Press and roll it onto the skin. This will help it to blend seamlessly. Add more foundation where necessary, but not too much or it will cake up.
Similarly, a tiny amount of concealer will suffice. Use a concealer brush - which can help you make the most out of a tiny bit of product - to cover up the dark circles around your eyes.
But be careful not to over-apply foundation or concealer onto the lines and furrows on your face. Just lightly dab both on.
Many make the mistake of filling the grooves with make-up as they think it will make them less visible. However, as you go about your day and with facial movements, the make-up will crease in those areas and emphasise your lines.
