5 sun protection skincare essentials
by Eugene Quek, Phoenix Leow

Consider this your digital hit-list of all the sun protective serums and salves we're coveting this week; some boast brightening benefits to boot.

Bookmark this page for easy reference if you're beauty shopping this week, and have fun splurging on these fabulous face and body savers!

1. Nivea Whitening In-shower Conditioner, $10.90

The scorching sun this time of the year has got us cycling through tubes of sunscreen at an alarming rate. If, gulp, the sun has already gotten to you, try Nivea's new Whitening In-shower conditioner.

Enriched with 50 times more vitamin C than lemon extract, Nivea claims the cream will brighten your dull skin in a jiffy. Simply apply after washing off your usual shower gel, and rinse off to whiter skin!

2. Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum Gold, $66.90 for 120ml

Pamper yourself this week with a luxurious gold serum. Skinfood's black sugar range will be augmented with a lovely limited edition Gold serum as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

The new serum is filled with a renewing multi-fruit complex and pure flakes of gold, giving your skin an added beautifying boost. The brand claims that gold halts hyperpigmentation and the deepening of wrinkles, while burnishing your everyday regimen with a luxe patina.

3. The FaceShop Natural Sun Eco Power Long-lasting Sun Cream, $32.90

Our sunny island is perennially ablaze with the fierce rays so incorporate the latest heavy-duty "sun killer" by The Faceshop into your daytime arsenal.

Supposedly sourced using entirely natural skin-loving botanicals like organic sunflower sprouts and steeped with the antioxidant superfood goodness of acai berries, this star product from the trusty Korean beauty brand is said to fly off the shelves at a dizzying rate of one piece per minute.

With a more than decent SPF45 PA+++ rating, the Natural Sun AQ Power Long-lasting Sun Cream is billed as a round-the-clock sunscreen, meaning it can stave off moonlight and neon disco rays if you so choose.

This silky salve is also ever so slightly tinted and blends beautifully to a powdery finish; skip the blemish balms and use this alone, on bare skin, on days when you want to look polished and makeup-free.

4. Sulwhasoo Snowise EX Whitening Serum, $268

An unabashed personal fave, the ingredients list of this sumptuous new whitening serum from the Korean prestige skincare label reads like an alchemical recipe from our soup-brewing Grandma: White ginseng essence, for starters, which Sulwhasoo says is a time-honoured traditional skin exfoliant; white cloud grass for a dash of "cooling" and soothing TCM goodness; and white ginseng polysaccharides, which are potent plant-derived carbohydrate molecules said to kickstart collagen production for visibly plumper, more evenly toned skin.

According to the sciencey folks at Sulwhasoo, this serum also boasts the fascinating ability to halt the so-called glycation process, which is the skin sallowness induced by too much sugary afternoon tea indulgence.

5. Aesop Protective Lip Balm SPF30, $27

Your pillowy puckers are incredibly vulnerable to the vagaries of the sun, making this new dedicated lip saviour an everyday essential.

Untinted for unisex appeal, the stylishly minimalist packaging belies the botanical richness within: Comforting oils courtesy of castor seed and jojoba are lovingly folded into herbal waxes for a surpassingly smooth and beautifully buttery mouthfeel.

Finally, powerful UVA and UVB filters make this handy stick a veritable Ray Ban for your lips. Lash on liberally throughout the day to ward off environmental baddies, or glide on a generous layer as a protective primer prior to your lippie of choice.
