Fresh like spring
by Karen Tee

Spring in the fashion world has sprung and it is time to update your look.

Spring make-up does not have to mean pink, pink and more baby pink, though.

This season, colours take on bright cotton candy hues. Think pistachio green, aquamarine, fuchsia and peach sorbet.

So strong is this trend that even Clarins has broken ranks with the soft natural colours it favours to create a spring look with peacock hues of blue, green and lilac.

If you have shaky hands and are hopeless at brushing on eye or lip liner, there is reason to rejoice.

Spring 2009 is all about looking artfully undone, so you can get away with smudged eyeliner and lipstick that are smeared on.

No matter what the look, one thing in your beauty regimen should always remain - a beautiful complexion.

Said Paris-based Frederic Reymond, Clarin's international make-up artist, when he was in town last month to launch the brand's latest make-up collection: 'You can have bad eye or lip make-up, but if you have a good complexion, all is forgiven.'

With this advice in mind, Urban gets make-up artist Larry Yeo to conjure up the six looks that you must try now.

EARTH GODDESS

Give a new spin to the tried-and-tested neutral colours with metallic shades instead.

Beiges, browns, taupes, warm honeys and dusky coffees are so much more alluring when they are glammed up with a sheen.

Keep your blush matte so you can use it to sculpt your cheek bones to chiselled perfection.

Get the look:

  1. Chanel Les 4 Ombres in Mystic Eyes, $83
  2. Estee Lauder Fleur de Lys Shimmer Powder, $55
  3. Cle de Peau Beaute Blush Couleur Duo in Sand Brown, $73 for palette and $61 for case, from next week

  5. Glominerals gloPrecision Brow Pencil in Taupe, $31
  6. Clinique Long Last Gloss SPF 15 in Air Kiss, $31

GO GO GLOW

You want your skin to glow without it looking like an oil slick.

To fake it, use a foundation with a sheer finish.

If you have oily skin, use a make-up base with oil-control properties before applying foundation.

Pick eyeshadows and lip colours with sheen and shimmer so light can bounce off your skin.

Get the look:

  1. Clinique Quick Blush in Hurry Honey, $49
  2. Maquillage Face Creator (3D) in Nuance Beige, $45 for palette and $28 for case, from Sunday

EYE WONDER

A good way to appear dolled up without going overboard is to focus on just one feature on your face.

To play up your peepers, first ensure that your eyebrows are well groomed. Colour them in with eyebrow mascara for added definition, then use liquid eyeliner to create a thin wingtip at your outer upper lash line.

Get the look:

  1. Shu Uemura Lip Duo Tint and Gloss in Rouge and Gloss, $48
  2. RMK Translucent Cheeks & Eyes in Translucent Coral Gold, $70

PUNK PRINCESS

Perfection is passe. To channel your inner rock star, smear your darkest black eyeliner onto your eyelids then use a finger to smudge it out for that too-cool-to-care touch.

If all that black is too goth for your liking, tone it down with purple eyeshadow - it works well on most skin tones - in a shade such as violet or lilac on the inner corners of your eyes.

Get the look:

  1. Estee Lauder TurboLash mascara, $50
  2. Cle de Peau Beaute Intensifying Cream Eyeliner in Deep Black, $98, from next week

  5. Laneige Art Play Lip Palette #2, $55, from March23
  6. Origins Organics Soothing Lip Balm, $30

BIRDS OF PARADISE

The colours to wear to look bang on trend are candy pink, aquamarine, pistachio green and fuchsia.

Play up the colours by pairing colourful eyes with pink lips or tone your bright eye colour down with nude lips.

Either way, you are sure to turn heads. We show you two different ways to wear these colours.
